Sorin vs. Tibalt Duel Deck?

Hello, I just had a quick question regarding duel decks.

I have an original Sorin, Lord of Innistrad foil card from Dark Ascension, which is prolly my most prized Magic card to me. I read recently though about a new duel deck, Sorin vs. Tibalt coming out Mar. 15th, whch is supposed to include foil versions of both Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and Tibalt with new art.

This may be a weird question, but as a fairly new Magic player, I was wondering about the value of cards that are re-released in duel decks. Will my Dark Ascension Sorin decrease in value because of this duel deck?

I don't believe so. Most people still value the cards from the original sets more than the ones from the duel decks. At the very least I do. I never really understood why the planeswalkers in those decks held much value, but they do for collectors I guess. I would still rest pretty soundly on the one you have regardless. Hes worth about $50 right now if I'm not mistaken and I can't imagine it fluctuating that much with a Sorin vs. Tibalt dual deck that most people wouldnt even buy because Tibalt is kind of shitty.

It all depends on the power of the card. A card like Sorin, Lord of Innistrad that sees play won't drop far in price, for instance, Thragtusk was printed not once, but twice in Event decks, and it's still a $20 card

Maybe so, but not because it was reprinted in a product like a DD. It's price is going down due to the fact that there are many answers to it in Gatecrash, so it will see less play.

Thragtusk doesn't cycle out until October, and only if it isn't reprinted. It will still see a lot of play in the meantime, but its exact market value will vary according to its strength in the Standard meta. Skullcrack is going to hurt Thragtusk 's playability.

As for Sorin, Lord of Innistrad , and NM/M foil goes for about $50 right now. When DDK (the presumed expansion code for Duel Decks: Sorin vs. Tibalt) is released, I could see the price declining. It depends on the quality of the promotional art and how popular Sorin is at that time. Personally, I'd trade the foil Sorin for a nonfoil one. Then, if you're still uncomfortable about the prices, you can trade that off before DDK hits and pick up the lowest-cost copy in the following weeks.

They might be printing Sorin Markov , in which case there'd be no reason for Sorin, LOI to fluctuate.

Unlikely at best.

If they want the decks to sell, it will definitely be Sorin, Lord of Innistrad . No one will by the DD if all it contains are Sorin 1.0 and MVP for Worst Planeswalker of all time Tibalt.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! :)

Was wondering whether or not I should sell the Sorin now while he's still valuable because he'll be easier to get once the duel deck comes out, and yer replies are helping me to decide.

I'm not quite sure yet, but I think maybe I'll just hold on to the card for now based on the fact that it holds a special place in my heart. :D

The reprint won't hurt his price. People will still want the originals.

Look at Elspeth, Knight-Errant . The foil duel deck one is worth less than a normal one. Some people get the duel deck version because it's cheaper for a foiled, but lots of people still want "pack foils".

The only thing that would really change his price is if he rotates out.

If it has sentimental value, I'd keep it. Even if you never sleeve it up, you will regret not having it even if its value drops significantly.

A large part of the price will depend on what else is in the box and the state of each format. Rat's Nest from Betrayers of Kamigawa, for example, had card:Umezawa's Jitte. The price of the precon actually rose because Jitte itself was around $15 at the time (precons retailed for $10 and jitte still hovers between $25-$30). It's also not like Maze of Ith or Sol Ring went down in price for being in special gift boxes, mainly because the other cards they come with are valuable (i.e. people buy the boxes up).

In the case of Duel Decks, if the cards inside are worth the $19.99 retail or more, I doubt sorin will take a hit since the contents of the box is worth more than what you pay for it. The market can always change before wizards can modify the contents (as was the case with Jitte, which got banned).

Demand effects price. Supply effects price. Plus many other unaccounted variables. It is the other variables that need to be sorted through in order to make an educated guess on what will happen to the price.

Sell. He'll rotate out, get used less, be worth less money. Buy him later, use the extra cash towards something else.

I know how you feel, I have a non-foil Sorin 2.0 that I have and love but have no use for it. I'll keep it and probably buil;d a deck around because nobody locally wants him. But keep it if you want, his price will dropp I'm guessing doen to around $10 non foil after the rotation.

I honestly don't know why anybody would get the Tibalt one when there is Sorin to choose from.

He'll drop like a rock post rotation but he's a good enough card that (given time) he'll go back up so if you really like him hold onto him.

You don't pick, the set comes with 2 decks in 1 box. You get both Tibalt and Sorin. Both with there own decks. and even though Tibalt is the worst Walker printed yet, the art is still pretty awesome and his deck has a Hellrider in it. But Sorin still had the better art of the 2.

I personally don't see why Tibalt gets so much hate. Yeah, his +1 sucks because it's a discard at random, but if you're playing a faster aggro deck with him, chances are early game you've played what you needed to, so it won't matter. I've won many games with a Tibalt deck, and some of them were finished by stealing whatever creatures I let them keep and attacking them with their own creatures.

In my experience what makes Tibalt good is the fact that he appears to be so weak. I say that because I've overlooked him and lost to his final ability many times. The second thing that makes him (and all pw's for that matter) good is that he can buy you a turn by getting your opponent to swing at him rather than you
