Magic the Drunkening Ages 21+ Only

Disclaimer: Like the title states, this post contains material related to the consumption of alcohol and is only intended for players of legal drinking age.

Also please let me know if this is not appropriate for this site, I don't see anything indicating that it's not.

Me and my friends came up with a multiplayer MTG drinking game.

It's played exactly like you would normally play magic except you drink whenever certain things happen, such as:

-Everytime you lose 1 life you drink for 1 second

-Everytime a creature you control dies you take 1 drink

-If you or your team loses the game, take a shot

-If the game goes on longer than 30 minutes then everyone takes a shot.

-If you win the game in less than ten turns then your opponent takes two shots

There are a couple other ones as well that I can't recall at the moment (sometimes the rules change game to game).

I was just curious if anyone else has ever tried something like this and if anyone has any suggestions for any additional rules because we're going to be playing a large group game tonight and I'd like to bring something new to the table.

Thanks! And please drink responsibly!

That is awesome! Some videos posted on YouTube could be the next "viral thing" haha.

You should make a rule that if the group game goes over an hour there is an IMMEDIATE emblem that hits the field and says "Anytime a land is tapped for mana it's controller takes a drink"

Good times

.....I really like the idea of that emblem, if anything I think it would be a good incentive for people to be really brutal and try to end the game as quickly as possible, which is good considering that our group games usually run pretty long.

Thanks for the idea!

No problem :) I'm diabolical with things like that. Now take it a step further and play something like Armageddon when you have mana producing artifacts in play and durdle til your friends are plastered!

themindbullet says... #5

Nice! However I think the craziest thing that could happen would be a Supreme Verdict with a loaded battlefield or something similar as we really only play standard right now. The most anyone has had to drink at one time was like 10-15 seconds or so for a Savageborn Hydra that had been pumped with Kessig wolfrun, oh and then take a shot because it was lethal damage.

We have drinking and drafting nights sometimes. Those are always funny. There is always the one guy in the corner with a bottle of Kraken that ends up with all white spells and all red lands.

August 9, 2013 10 a.m.

themindbullet says... #8

Lol truble, we had a bottle of Kraken a few weeks ago and man does it get ugly fast. It's really funny how much the dynamic of the game changes when you're forced to drink, it gives your opponent the upper hand very quickly, especially if it's drink after drink after drink...

August 9, 2013 10:10 a.m.

truble says... #9

Yeah, I played a guy in EDH one time after he had done a bar crawl. He couldnt untap his lands without help. let alone make good decisions

August 9, 2013 10:13 a.m.

themindbullet says... #10

Yeah we try not to let it get to that point, it's about having fun not making an ass of yourself... One of our biggest problems with group games is that once the game really gets going everyone has a tendency to forget what all is out on the field, especially when it comes to cards that are flipped over to represent tokens which can lead to a lot of mistakes, hilarious mistakes in a lot of cases.

I love this! and the "drink responsibly"... yep, don't foresee that happening in my mate's dorm at 3AM...

Degonvey, as long as there's no drinking and driving or binge drinking going on you're good!

I wanted to make a drinking set on Set Editor. It was called "Alcohalara" and would contain variations of existing cards with drinking rules text added and new drinks-related names, such as Rum Titan, Drink Twice, Bubbling Season, Eon Pub and Liquor Snag.

August 9, 2013 1:33 p.m.

pookypuppy6 says... #14

Which reminds me, I even made two mechanics for it:

Winestorm (When you cast this spell, copy it for each drink taken this turn)

Boozewalk (This creature is unblockable as long as your opponent has taken a drink this turn)

pookypuppy6 If this is not yet a thing, it needs to be.

pookypuppy6 says... #16

One thing I suggest is making themed Magic-themed drinks for it. I presume you have done this already, but you can do the five colours of Magic, or two of each to represent the guilds (Strawberry-ade and Apple-ade with some alcohol in each can be drunk simultaeneously to make the infamous "Gruul-ade"). Make sure the Rakdos one is full of grenadine or jaeger to make it look like blood, and the Simic one needs to look disgusting.

pookypuppy6 - All fantastic ideas, I knew you guys would take this to a whole new level.

Thanks everyone!

Throw your drink at your opponent it they counter your spells more than 3 times in 2 turns. In all seriousness there should be some counter thing as well. In fact you should drink if your spell fails to resolve or has no effect.

August 9, 2013 4:19 p.m.

themindbullet says... #19

beakedbard, if I remember correctly I think you do take 1 drink if your spell gets countered, but we might have voted against that since not everyone runs counters. I'm almost thinking that it would be fun to create a comprehensive list of rules and then build a deck specifically for this type of Magic.

August 9, 2013 4:24 p.m.

beakedbard says... #20

Aye but almost every deck runs something that stops a spell from fully resolving and cancelling its effects unless its extremely focused so I'd say add that it.

NONE THE LESS I USE COUNTERS! D:AM I NOT ALLOWED TO SHOUT DRINK AND THROW A COUNTER AT PEOPLE?

Well not that I'd do that anyway. XD

August 9, 2013 4:30 p.m.

themindbullet says... #21

lol that's a fair statement.

August 9, 2013 4:30 p.m.

themindbullet says... #22

And I run a fair amount of counters myself...

August 9, 2013 4:31 p.m.

Aerokid says... #23

Yeah, control players don't really beat face. A control/mill deck wouldn't really have anyone drinking that much unless it won.

I think 1 drink for a countered spell is fair. 2 drinks if the CMC was 6 or more.

And for funsies, finish the drink if the counterspell wins the game somehow.

August 10, 2013 12:38 a.m.

doinitwrong says... #24

  • Whenever you mulligan, take a drink.
  • Whenever your opponent asks how many cards are in your hand, have a drink. Do this no more than once a turn.
  • Whenever your opponent casts a spell or activates an ability during your end step, take a drink.
  • Whenever a Fog effect, counterspell, or boardwipe costs you the game, take a very large drink.

pookypuppy6 Some suggestions for Alcohalara:

  • Lagergoyf (P/T equal to types of drinks consumed this game)
  • Sober Second (Players can't drink while this is on the stack)
August 10, 2013 1:45 a.m.

pookypuppy6 says... #25

@doinitwrong: The Lagergoyf is gold! My first Sober Second card will be Sudden Spilling!

Chadarnook says... #26

I always wanted this creature in an drinking-themed set (Unsober maybe?):

Lagermorph

UU

Creature - Rabbit

Shroud

Whenever Lagermorph attacks a player and isn't blocked, each opponent takes a drink. Lagermorph assigns no combat damage this combat.

1/2

A player can't Shock it away, but you can't Artful Dodge it. I imagine some politics would occur along the lines of "Attack me with him and I won't block him so the others have to drink too!"

August 10, 2013 5:54 p.m.

Bellock86 says... #27

Booze Hound 2R

Creature - Hound. 1/3

Whenever you are dealt damage you may put that many Booze counters on Booze Hound.

At the beginning of each end step remove all booze countersfrom Booze Hound. Divide that many drinks amongst any number of players.

August 10, 2013 7:07 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #28

Drinkweed Imp 2B

Creature - imp

When ~ deals combat damage to a creature, destroy that creature.

Drink 6 (If you would draw a card, instead you may drink 6 and return this card from your graveyard to your hand)

1/2

August 10, 2013 7:20 p.m.

pookypuppy6 says... #29

@MindAblaze!: That Drink mechanic (whilst needing a more exciting name) is brilliant. Rather than trading your library as a resource, you're trading your mental acuity in the face of alcohol!

August 10, 2013 7:24 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #30

Lol. @ pookypuppy6 I could see that ending badly though...

August 10, 2013 7:57 p.m.

beakedbard says... #31

Well we have Voice of Jagermeister as well~

Just replace the put a token onto the battle field with drink a shot of jager.

August 10, 2013 9:10 p.m.

Cobthecobbler says... #32

Budbros, lord of shots. BBRR

Flying, trample

You may only cast Budbros if an opponent drank this turn.

Each creature you cast cost 1 less for each time your opponents drank this turn.

6/6

August 10, 2013 9:25 p.m.

Bellock86 says... #33

@Cobthecobbler ~ dude that is broke. You'd be playing everything for only it's colored mana cost. Lol. Maybe instead "less for each empty alcohol container that was consumed during the current game." Lol

August 10, 2013 9:43 p.m.

doinitwrong says... #34

Absinthling- Whenever you bounce it or make it unblockable, your opponent takes a shot.

Inebriation Pulse (Impulse )- Look at the top 4 cards of your library. For each card you look at, you may take a shot and put it in your hand. Put the rest on the bottom.

August 10, 2013 11:09 p.m.

doinitwrong says... #35

Azor's Temperance

At the beginning of your upkeep, put a sobriety counter on Azor's Temperance. Then if Azor's Temperance has five or more sobriety counters on it, you win the game.

Whenever you drink, remove a sobriety counter from Azor's Temperance.

August 10, 2013 11:13 p.m.

doinitwrong says... #36

Demonic Barkeep 1B

Sorcery

As an additional cost to cast Demonic Barkeep, take any number of drinks.

Search your library for a card with CMC less than or equal to the number of drinks youve had this turn and put it in your hand.

Ulamog, the Infinite Hangover 11

When you cast Ulamog, the Infinite Hangover, destroy target permanent.

Indestructible

Alcoholizer 4 (When this creature attacks, defending player takes 4 drinks)

When Ulamog is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner takes a shot and shuffles his or her graveyard into his or her library.

10/10

pookypuppy6 says... #41

I'd add reminder text to specify what "different drinks" means (does it mean different brands? Or different groups like beer, cider, vodka, etc.) Otherwise, fabulous. I might make this into a proxy Duel Decks series. (Black/Green boozy beatdown versus Red/Blue Drinkstorm)

August 11, 2013 2:04 p.m.

doinitwrong says... #42

I was thinking different groups, that way Lagergoyf would probably get to be about as powerful as Tarmogoyf does in MtG proper. With different brands, it could get out of hand quicker.

Duel decks for this would be hilarious! I love that idea.

Mythic for UR Drinkstorm: Spoof of Storm Entity - gets counters equal to drinks had this turn.

Absinthe Faerie Queen 3 U/B U/B U/B

Legendary Faerie Illusion

U/B X: Choose a color. Target opponent exiles the top X cards of his or her library. For each card of the chosen color exiled this way, that player takes a drink.

This one was an absolute pain. I couldn't find the original card art, so I had to cut it from the existing card, then throw it in a Timeshifted frame just to save as much of the picture as I could.

 photo LiquorEntity_zpsca20ed06.jpg

MindAblaze! your name gave me the idea for this one. Also it looks like I can't link your name. Huh.

 photo MindsAblaze_zpsbd5148ba.jpg

This was actually one of the first I tried. I haven't yet figured out how to get rid of the frame color and just have the picture as the background like the eldrazi cards actually are.
