Ripping through Khans packs at Bull moose the other day, and I got bummed out because I didn't pull anything significant. Weeks later (this morning) I check the price of that Monastery Swiftspear foil, its 17.64 on tcgplayer, 24.99 on SCG. I pooped a little.

So im wondering where you all think this cards going in price. Do you think it will continue to see play in modern, or see less play when hype dies down? Do you think its just going to tank when it rotates out of standard? Being a modern player, this foil kind of makes me want to jump on the bandwagon and build its host deck. But if its going to tank i just want to get rid of it.

Where is Monastery Swiftspear going?

It'll stay high. It's a popular card in decent decks in a variety of formats. Even post rotation it has value - especially foils.

I sold my foil one for $23 on eBay when khans first came out. I was in shock it was even worth that much for an uncommon foil.

I think the neat thing here is that foils break the mold on pricing. A Foil common is just as rare as a foil mythic, so when it comes to pricing the foil version will tell you how much the card really sees play.

That's why foils of Brainstorm or Treasure Cruise or... Swiftspear are worth so much.

on a side note, I had some friends pull a foil Monastery Swiftspear in our first draft of the set. I told them I wanted it but they had to leave early that night so I didn't get it. Then they traded it to a diff friend, who sold it for 10 bucks to the LGS, all before I could make my own offer. SIGH

@jraynor; this "A Foil common is just as rare as a foil mythic, so when it comes to pricing the foil version will tell you how much the card really sees play" is incorrect; about 1:6 foils are rare and 1:48 are mythic.

That is according to the interwebs, but makes sense given my experience. Just to put it in perspective, about 1/5 Khans is a rare, so you actually aren't that far off. Mythics though (if the interwebs are right) are definitely under-represented in foils.

I literally just put the entire UR delver list together minus Serum Visionss, Scalding Tarns and Arid Mesas. So it looks like im keeping it. I didnt realize I already owned so much of that deck.

@MangoPunch

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. Foils are printed in sheets so there are going to be exactly the same numbers of foil Monastery Swiftspear as there are Become Immense as there are Jace, The Mind Sculpter. Sure you might have a better chance of drawing ANY common foil than you will ANY rare foil but your chances of drawing a specific foil will be exactly equal to your chances of drawing any other specific foil regardless of rarity.

Jace is a bad example since for the cards to contain the same chance of pulling them, they would all have to be in the same set. The point remains though

it'll stay high for a while, eventually it will plumet, but not for as long as its standard and doesn't get dethrowned by some other one drop.

Darkhero, why do you say it'll plummet? I assume you mean post rotation? It sees plenty of eternal play already if I'm not mistaken.

TheLitchKing says... #16

It's a staple in Legacy Delver and Burn lists so rotation will hardly have an impact on the foil. Eternal players are much more interested in foils than Standard players which will keep the foil price high.

DarkHero you are very mistaken. It is one of the most popular cards in Modern and Legacy, being in around 20% of all decks in those formats. Also older players enjoy foils more.

I love your addition to the deck. Seriously, Y hasn't that made it into the deck before? Seems like a perfect fit.
