Design Team Deadline Due 6-1-10

Custom Cards forum

Posted on May 23, 2010, 10:13 p.m. by mistergreen527

1) Create a design skeleton that divides the set as a whole by card archetype (incorporating color, but not shards at this point). For example, you could say that there should be one white wrath effect, three red burn spells, four blue flyers, etc. To do this, I suggest doing research on other sets and see how many of each card archetype they have.

2) After deciding how many of each card archetype the set will have, decide which of these archetypes belong on Irindu.

3) On Wednesday, May 26th, I will be posting the "create a planeswalker" challenge. Each person on the design team should rate each card based on the criteria that I will describe in the article (discuss them in privately in our Set Builders forum).

yeaGO says... #2

Will it be a bit anticlimatic doing Planeswalkers first? I mean I know people are probably more eager to do it....

May 23, 2010 10:27 p.m.

mistergreen527 says... #3

Well, we're only going to do ONE planeswalker (the Irindu one). Doing it early will help the Creative Team story-wise. Plus, as you said, people are eager to do it, so it should get people more interested in the project. They'll have to stick around if they want to help create the other ones.

Xander574 says... #4

okay so i know that this is the most to least ratio of creatures by color white(the most creatures but all generally smaller) green(second most creatures but are much bigger) black(middle ground for creatures) red(generally one less creature then black) blue(least amount of creatures)

we should at first rate the creature ratio for each shard, since as much as spells are important creatures are the back bone

my vote

GBW(most creatures mostly mall and cooperative) BUG(second most not necisarily bigger but with more keywords, deathtouch and wither) BWR(middle ground, of creatures) RUG(second to least creatures WUR(least amount of creatures)

Also important keywords and abilities that each one should have GBW(Creature mana ramp maybellanawar-elves,Render, vigilance, flying direct damage ) BUG(deathtouch, wither, reach, flash, trample, landwalk, lifelink ) BWR(intimadate, vigilance, firebreathing, protection, flying,bloodletting/cleave, firststrike) RUG( flying, firebreathing, regenerate, flow, haste) WUR(flying, defender, first/double strike, vigilance, flying, unblockable, clamp)

Lastly abilities that each color should have thematiclu GBW(tribal buffs) BUG(permenent distruction) BWR(board swipe, creature removal) RUG(card draw library manipulation, burn) UWR(control, counter magic.)

May 24, 2010 5:36 a.m.

Xander574 says... #5

oh gbw should also have lifegain and bug should have graveyard manipulation

May 24, 2010 5:38 a.m.

Xander574 says... #6

oh and (sorry triple post) but when it comes to the planeswalker, we should make clear that it isnt the one that created this plane, i kinda see him being 5 color and in the last set, maybe the last thing we do. other then that im down

May 24, 2010 5:40 a.m.

TAMA says... #7

Copying with edits for my take.

GBW(most creatures mostly mall and cooperative) agreed

BUG(second most not necisarily bigger but with more keywords, deathtouch and wither)

BWR(middle ground, of creatures)

WUR(second to least amount of creatures)

RUG(least creatures)

Also important keywords and abilities that each one should have

GBW(Mana Ramp, Render, vigilance, lifelink is important for the render component)

BUG(deathtouch, wither, reach, trample)

BWR(intimadate, clamp, vigilance, firebreathing, protection, flying, bloodletting/cleave, firststrike, lifelink, deathtouch, flanking, flying) pretty much the core keyword whore.

RUG(flying, regenerate, flow, haste, troll shroud)

WUR(flying, defender, first/double strike, vigilance, flash, flying, unblockable, clamp)

Lastly abilities that each color should have thematiclu

GBW(tribal buffs) shamans, treefolk, elves, beasts, centaurs. TRIBAL/ZOO

BUG (permanent destruction) GRAVEYARD

BWR (board swipe, creature removal, semi-OP dudes) AGGRO/BURN

RUG (card draw library manipulation, burn) COMBO/BURN

UWR (control, counter magic, effective creatures) CONTROL

May 24, 2010 9:23 p.m.

Xander574 says... #8

okay so specifically for RUG this is by ratios. There should be "one" mana fetching cards instants/sorceries there should be "one" burn spells (just burn spells_ there should be "two" card draw spells Also Browbeat should be a reprint in the shard

May 25, 2010 12:37 a.m.

Xander574 says... #9

also i think it should be by shard, read the skeleton article.

May 25, 2010 12:46 a.m.

I_Call_BS says... #10

For creatures, i'm thnking in the same way as xander. I was thinking that creatures, for the most part, would be rather ability-heavy. Large creatures perhaps, as that fits r/g, but no Goliath Sphinx es or anything like that without an ability. Archetype-wise, a fair amount of land-search abilities, a large amount of card draw/flow, and a lesser amount, though still substantial, burnish creatures (fast, high power, low toughness, etc). Maybe 2:3:1 ish, in the order listed above. Plus 3-color mixes of all those.

May 25, 2010 1:15 a.m.

TAMA says... #11

I was thinking high power lower toughness but creatures in Irindu have powerful abilities instead of many abilities. Red, green, blue have flying, haste, trample as their core abilities and shroud, reach, first strike and occasionally deathtouch. As opposed to say Sorok which is Red, White, Black which has Intimidate, First strike, haste, lifelink and deathtouh as core abilities and flying, regeneration, protection, doublestrike, flanking, vigilance as secondary.

E.g. Irindu creatures

4/2 Troll Shroud

5/1 Haste Trample

6/3 flying

Sorok Creature

2/2 first strike, haste

2/3 lifelink, vigilance

5/5 flying, protection from (something), deathtouch, lifelink

May 25, 2010 5:55 a.m.

Xander574 says... #12

allot of the irindu creatures are broken.

May 25, 2010 3:27 p.m.

I_Call_BS says... #13

By ability heavy I meant either strong or many. So yes I agree Tama those are the types of creatures we should see. And Xander we don't have the costs decided yet. How can they be broken already? Yes they have the potential, but the costs can balance that.

May 25, 2010 6:09 p.m.

Xander574 says... #14

So here is the whole skeleton for the 5 shards based off the skeleton previously made. I am going to make a google dock so taht we can all edit it more freely, ill link to that later today. i may need peoples emails so we can all look at it. Comments- I think we may want to make the common colors a little more balanced and even otherwise im good.

Lastly im going to start putting in the creature vs spells for the commons either today or tonight.

here is the google dock for the skeleton we are all able to edit it SO be CAREFUL [https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AjH13wic5OMIdGt1cUtGVXg1U2JfZFVVblBRZC1mRkE&hl=en

Xander574 says... #16

common break down there are 18 commons in each shard at the moment 7-enemy color 4 each-allied colors 1-allyA and enemy color 1 allyB and enemy color 1 tri color

If we say the middle ground would be half creatures half then the creature vs sell breakdown would be as follows GBW-11 creatures BUG-10 creatures BWR-9 creatures WUR-8 creatures RUG-7 creatures.

(which color each creature should show up in may be more dependant on the colors)(i am going to fill this out in the skeleton in the google doc.)

May 25, 2010 9:40 p.m.

I just checked out the Google Document that Xander574 created. It looks AMAZING. I highly recommend that everyone checks it out.

What type of participation would you guys like for the June 2nd article?

May 30, 2010 11:56 p.m.

Xander574 says... #25

what do you mean

May 31, 2010 12:52 a.m.

Well, I was envisioning another card creation challenge where the community creates some of the blue Irindu commons, with guidelines based on the skeleton. But, I'm looking for what you guys want the community to do this week.

May 31, 2010 1:29 a.m.

Xander574 says... #27

maybe either make the legendary dragon- or the uncommon RUG casting cost creature

Common Cantrips in any of the slots we have perhaps using flow but not necessarily.

May 31, 2010 6:39 p.m.

I_Call_BS says... #30

The uncommon RUG creature/"charm" sounds good to me.

May 31, 2010 7:25 p.m.

Xander574 says... #31

maybe do common rug creature, uncommon charm, and rare ultimatum?

May 31, 2010 8:08 p.m.

I_Call_BS says... #32

All three?

May 31, 2010 8:17 p.m.

I think three might be too much. How about just the charm and the ultimatum with a limit of two entries per card per person?

May 31, 2010 11:22 p.m.

I saw I_Call_BS' idea on the other thread about having the community vote. Can you guys first email me your completed table with all of your scores so that I can look it over before a decision is made?

May 31, 2010 11:25 p.m.

@tama hey we need you to highlight your top five picks in the planeswalkers challenge so we can continue.

SCORE: 1 | 0 COMMENTS | 440 VIEWS
Standard CW Playtest

and pretty much every time I've went against G/X decks with Mistcutter Hydra its just been getting free hits till either I won or my opponent won.

The only things I can think of are Cyclonic Rift and AEtherize , but they don't work as well as you'd think cause they can just send it back the next turn with even more counters

I once had to resort to using Rapid Hybridization on one of my own dudes to block, but it still didn't save me the round.

If you happen to have a Ratchet Bomb at 1, that works pretty well at killing Mistcutter Hydra

I've had it before cause I was using Curse of the Swine at 4 and Rapid Hybridization at 3, but it was a dead draw most of the time.
