Progenitus ?

Commander (EDH) forum

So i built a deck with Progenitus as my commander and it was a 5 color gods EDH deck. Worked fairly well but was still difficult to pull off with out having some kind of issue even with having Primal Surge being one of two spells in the deck.

So my question is can / should Progenitus be use as a commander and what should the focus be with him. I am looking into building another deck focusing around him and just not sure what to do with it. I am open to possibly using a different commander. Any ideas would be great!

I have a friend with a five color gods deck, and he likes to run Child of Alara, since all the gods are indestructible.

As far as Progenitus goes, I don't like to run him as a commander because he's freakin ten mana, and double of every color. I don't play him personally, but it's really hard to get that mana, and besides, every other person at the table is gonna keep that two mana open to counter him.

I just think that ten mana is too much for a commander. He gets countered, exiled, whatever, and all of a sudden he's suddenly 12/14/16 mana to cast. You could totally run him in the deck but I wouldn't run him as a commander.

Best of luck!

I use him in my Deified deck, since he gives two devotion to each color if you manage to get him into play. It's slower than I'd like, but heck, it's a theme deck.

Okay so what do you run as a 5-color commander if you don't want to use Child of Alara?

With Progenitus, you can just run a strong ramp plan and try to just smash them to death with him. I've found that to work quite well (not personally, but I have played against such strategies a lot). Also, you can just use him as a powerful back up plan to whatever else you choose to do (I've done this with enchantress EDH, and sometimes I just Dream Halls him into play and win a few turns later. It works well).

Gods for fun??? built it several months ago and have been unsure how to use Progenitus again as a commander or if i should try a different commander with a different theme. Also Child of Alara is just to easy to stop and the effect doesnt work UNLESS you sending your commander to the GY which is not always a great place for them.

Child of Alara can work well, you just need things like Corpse Dance, Disturbed Burial, etc. to make it recurrable.

My roommate ran him alongside Doubling Cube, which helped the ramp a fair bit, particularly when fitting in the correct colors.

I have a Super Friends 5c deck with Progenitus as commander. I just use him for the colors and not cast him. There are games that I could but I'm more working towards getting 3+ Planeswalkers on the table and casting Obliterate. Wins me games just fine.
