Yurlok Loves You More Than You’ll Ever Know

Commander / EDH* BRG (Jund) Combo

Oof_Magic

Yurlok of Scorch Thrash is a tough build around as he is essentially the mana burn commander. The idea that your punishing your opponents for having too much mana implies that they have too much mana. This creates two really big questions for the strategy. 1) Why are you giving your opponent mana? 2) While there are certainly effects that either tap lands (Rishadan Port) and others that force your opponent to tap their lands (War's Toll) this still doesn’t mean your opponent has to tap them for mana. While they can certainly incentivize players to do so to get some benefit with the issue being forced, they have the choice at the end of the day and largely control how badly they are burned. How can we turn this group slug Commander into a legitimate killer? We play control and leverage a broad suite of tutors to get our primary win condition Umbral Mantle. Mantle feels like a must have for any Yurlok deck as it threatens to pop the whole board at once. You activate Yurlok to give everyone three mana. You put that mana into using the Umbral Mantle ability to get +2/+2 and untap him. To get that extra mana to reactivate Yurlok though, you’re going to need Leyline of Abundance, Mana Reflection, or Nyxborn Ancient to leverage the power of infinity. With infinite mana, that becomes infinite damage. You just have to put in place enough protection before hand so as to not die from it. Infinite mana sounds like a Walking Ballista kill. So you’ll want to load up on sweepers, Witchbane Orb, Asceticism, and loads of disruption. You don’t really want to be deploying your commander until it’s time to go in the kill. So let’s get into the build.
