What happens when you copy Phyrexian Metamorph with Sakashima the Impostor?

Asked by scionmastery 8 years ago

One of the big things with Sakashima is it can only copy creatures while metamorph can copy both creatures and artifacts.

So what happens if you copy a metamorph (which is a creature) with Sakashima? Can Sakashima, now a copied metamorph, copy artifacts?

Also, side question, if Phyrexian Metamorph is copying an artifact is it still a creature that Sakashima the Impostor can copy?

I'm mostly asking because the EDH deck I'm building kind of needs a copier or two and I don't have metamorph, but pulled Sakashima years ago...and the people I play with tend to run the metamorph a lot.

Sakashima would be a copy of whatever the Metamorph is copying, and additionally be an artifact in addition to its other types, be legenday, be named "Sakashima the Imposter" and have the bounce ability.

"Copy effects" such as the Metamorph's actually change the card's copiable values, so if you make a new copy of the Metamorph you don't get to choose another new thing to copy; you just get whatever the Metamorph is already copying, but as an artifact.

Its like Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, any ability and type on the card, Sakashima copies. For example, If you have a 3/2 Green Insect with Trample and Deathtouch... Sakashima becomes a Legdendary creature - Human Rouge Insect with Trample, Deathtouch, and the ability that Sakashima already has of returning it to owners hand. Hope that helped.

To answer your side question; if Phyrexian Metamorph is copying a non-creature artifact then it is not a creature and not a valid choice for Sakashima the Impostor to copy.

The way copy effects work is that the card that is the copy is treated as if it were exactly the card it copies with any changes made by the copy effect. So to answer you question and clear up some confusion in other posts:

And as soon as I post I notice that in my first example I said "valid target", copy effects don't normally target and Sakashima the Impostor specifically doesn't. I should have said "... and would not be a valid choice for Sakashima the Impostor."
