Tooth and Nail entwined, fetching for Avenger of Zendikar and Craterhoof Behemoth

Asked by hfvalenz 6 years ago

Since both creatures enter the battlefield on the resolution of Tooth and Nail I'm not sure if I get time to respond to ETB triggers. Say the controller orders those triggers on the stack as this:

  1. When Craterhoof Behemoth enters the battlefield, creatures you control gain trample and get +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of creatures you control.

  2. When Avenger of Zendikar enters the battlefield, create a 0/1 green Plant creature token for each land you control.

My question is this:

Can I respond to the resolution of the Avenger's trigger? I would cast Echoing Decay for example, targetting a 0/1 plant token. Can this resolve before the Craterhoof's trigger making the plants huge?

Yes. When all players pass priority, only the top spell or ability on the stack resolves. Then, players have a chance to respond again.

Your opponent ill have to put both triggers on the stack, and will likely put Craterhoof Behemoth's trigger on the bottom and Avenger of Zendikar's on top. You won't respond, allowing the top ability to resolve and make a bunch of tokens. Then your opponent will get priority again and assume the bottom ability is going to resolve because people don't normally respond in the middle of a stack resolution, so they'll pass priority. At this point you'll have priority and be able to respond, casting Echoing Decay or Bile Blight or Echoing Truth on one of the tokens. Now you'll pass priority and give your opponent a chance to respond. If they don't, the spell will resolve killing all the tokens and leaving the stack with Craterhoof Behemoth's ability on it and your opponent having [priority. They pass to you, you pass back, and the ability resolves with a smaller boost to the team than they wanted.
