Ruthless Deathfang, Quickling and sacrifice order.

Asked by Argy 8 years ago

My Opponent has a Ruthless Deathfang and a 1/1 Thopter on the field.

She chooses to sac the Thopter.

I only have a Gudul Lurker on the field.

Is there any way I could choose to sac the Lurker then Flash Quickling in and return the Gudul Lurker to hand before it dies?

Thanks for any help.

In short, no.

deathfang's ability is a triggered one that triggers whenever its controller sacrifices a creature (note, in your example there must be something making your opponent sacrifice the thopter, he cannot sacrifice it without a spell or ability instructing him to do so).

The triggered effect goes on the stack. When it resolves, you choose a permanent matching the type in the ability (no targeting involved) and put in the graveyard. Since you have no priority when something on the stack resolves, you cannot cast any spell or activate any abilities.

That Lurker is a goner.

OK.

Thanks for that information.

Just to add, if your opponent is not sacrificing his or her creature to pay a cost of a spell or ability but rather as the resolution of a spell or ability, you can respond to whatever is causing your opponent to sacrifice a creature.

I think a card like Victimize would be an example. when they cast Victimize, you can respond to the spell going onto the stack before the resolution which includes the sacrificing of the creature.

Though in this case, you would flash in Quickling, return the Gudul Lurker, and then your Quickling would get sac'd.

Though I suppose the gist of the answer is still the same...you're still going to lose a creature due to the sac.

Actually I just realized, the accepted answer is partially incorrect (and my earlier answer can also be used even if the creature is sac'd for a cost).

Whenever a triggered ability is put onto the stack, priority is passed before the triggered ability is resolved. At this time a player may play instants and activate abilities (including playing cards with flash).

So even if the thopter is sacrificed for whatever reason, he still has a chance to cast his Quickling before the triggered ability of the Ruthless Deathfang has a chance to resolve. The only catch is that like I mentioned before, the Quickling will get sac'd instead of the Gudul Lurker.
