Rules Challenge - Rhox Faithmender and Armadillo Cloak
Asked by KrazyCaley 11 years ago
I control Rhox Faithmender
. I enchant it with Armadillo Cloak
. Then I enchant it with another Armadillo Cloak
. Then I equip it with Fireshrieker
.
Now I attack with the Faithmender, and it goes unblocked. How much life will I gain during the combat damage step?

I say 40.
Heres why:
Armadillo cloak sin't lifelink, check the gatherer. So it does stack, plus double strike.
So you hit for 10, gain 10 from one cloak, 10 from another, then double from the effect.
10 + 10 = 20 *2 = 40

Oh! I was under the false impression that the cloak was Erratad! It is not.
In which case you gain 5 (lifelink) 5 (cloak 1) 5 (cloak 2) doubled. Or 30 HP an attack.
Net result is the opponent loses 10 life and you gain 60 HP.

Actually, Armadillo Cloak does not grant Lifelink. Instead, it grants a triggered ability that gives you life when it deals damage. Very similar in wording to Lifelink, but very different in practice.
For each strike, you gain 5 from Lifelink, 5 from one Armadillo Cloak , then 5 from the other Armadillo Cloak . So you're gaining 15 life per hit, which Rhox Faithmender then doubles to 30.
You gain a total of 60 life.

You gain 60 life.
First strike damage causes the Faithmender to hit for 5 (it is a 5/9 trample lifelink). This causes you to gain 10 life (due to lifelink, and the Faithmender's replacement effect). Then both Armadillo Cloak effects go on the stack, each gaining you 10 life (again, 5 doubled to become 10). So you've gained 30 life.
Then, regular combat damage happens, and the same thing happens - you gain 30 more life in three batches of 10. So at the end of the combat step, you are 60 life higher than you started.

I will go with 60 as well. 5/9 trample lifelink doublestrike that doubles any life gained, and each Armadillo Cloak triggers separately from the lifelink keyword, meaning each instance of damage will be doubled three times (total of x6 life gain per damage dealt). With double strike, this amounts to 60 life gained, 30 during each combat damage step.

60 is correct! Lifelink does NOT stack, but Armadillo Cloak
doesn't grant lifelink.
So you have 5 power. For each damage, you get 6 life back (2 armadillo cloaks and the native lifelink, times two for the Faithmender's doubling ability). One hit thus gives you 30 (5 x 6) life, and since we're double-striking, it's 60 life.

@vampirelazarus = Getting the key, hard part of the question right but getting the overall answer wrong due to an overlooked minor detail would seem to be a sure sign of mathematics final burnout.

Interesting old school note: Before pacifism hit the scene Spirit Link was used to subdue big fatties for this very effect.

Im just... going to go listen to Enigma and lie down....
May 14, 2013 2:29 p.m.
That's because the "you" referenced in Spirit Link is the controller of the enchantment, not the creature's controller, correct?

Yup, whenever a card says "you", it means the card's controller. So they can attack all they want with their big monster, as long as it's not lethal.

Also, KrazyCaley's above scenerio is commonly known as "The night at the Rhoxbury."

Didn't read any responses yet.
Rhox Faithmender , Armadillo Cloak , Armadillo Cloak , Fireshrieker .
Rhox Faithmender becomes a 5/9 Trample DoubleStrike Lifelink that gains you twice the amount of life when it deals damage (before its static ability).
Rhox hits with FirstStrike damage. With Lifelink, you instantly gain 10 life. The first A-Cloak resolves and you gain 10 life (from 5 damage) and the other goes off, gaining you another 10 (5 damage). Then normal damage occurs, and you gain another 10, 10, and 10.
So 60.

After the bonuses Rhox is a 5/9 trample lifelink. Even though he's got trample and lifelink assigned twice it doesn't matter. He's either trample or not or lifelink or not.
He attacks and does 5 damage on the first strike. You would normally gain 5 from lifelink but he doubles it to 10. Then the second strike hits. You gain 10 from this hit as well.
The net result is that your opponent lost 10 life and you've gained 20.
