Response // Resurgence + Sunforger

Asked by Pedrodamus 5 years ago

Can i fetch out Response/Resurgence with Sunforger and cast resurgence even though it's a sorcery?

Response / Resurgence

No, you can't. Split cards have a CMC equal to the sum of both halves in every zone except on the stack (where the CMC is equal to the side that was cast). So its CMC in your library is 7, which is too high for Sunforger to fetch.

Hmm no, that's not true.

708.5. An effect that asks for a particular characteristic of a split card while it's in a zone other than the stack gets two answers (one for each of the split card's two halves).

708.6a An effect that performs a positive comparison (such as asking if a card is red) or a relative comparison (such as asking if a card's converted mana cost is less than 2) involving characteristics of one or more split cards in any zone other than the stack gets only one answer. This answer is "yes" if either side of each split card in the comparison would return a "yes" answer if compared individually.

Response meets the requirements for Sunforger , so you can fetch it out with Sunforger. What i'm unsure of is if i can cheat out Resurgence with it.

Gahhh, forget what i said cause i forgot they changed the split card rules with Amonkhet. Would i have been able to do this prior to that rule change though, hmmm. Would still like that answer so i can cry inside a little if i could cheat out an extra combat with Sunforger lol

You can use Sunforger to cast Failure, because while it's in your library it is a white and blue instant sorcery with CMC 3. You cannot cast Comply though because it cannot be cast from any zone other than your graveyard. Before Amonkhet came out there were no cards that were both an instant and sorcery, so that's a bit of a moot point, but you'd look at each half individually, and neither half of Failure to Comply fits the criteria, but one half of Response or Resurgence does, so your example would have worked, but who knows if instant sorceries would even exist at this point without the rules change.

Under the OLD version of the rules (which is what you quoted in your follow-ups), yes you could have done that. But as others have explained, the current rules don't allow for it. Here are the current rules, for reference:

708.4 In every zone except the stack, the characteristics of a split card are those of its two halves combined. This is a change from previous rules.

708.4a Each split card has two names. If an effect instructs a player to choose a card name and the player wants to choose a split card’s name, the player must choose one of those names and not both. An object has the chosen name if one of its names is the chosen name.

708.4b The mana cost of a split card is the combined mana costs of its two halves. A split card's colors and converted mana cost are determined from its combined mana cost.

Example: Assault // Battery's mana cost is {3}{R}{G}. It's a red and green card with a converted mana cost of 5. If you cast Assault, the resulting spell is a red spell with a converted mana cost of 1.

708.4c A split card has each card type specified on either of its halves and each ability in the text box of each half.

708.4d The characteristics of a fused split spell on the stack are also those of its two halves combined (see rule 702.101, "Fuse").

Neotrup, just for clarification, your explanation with Failure is specifically for the old version of the rules, yes? With the new version, Failure / Comply has the full combined CMC in the library, not just Failure's half.

Kogarashi: Sunforger's CMC limit is 4. You're allowed to choose Failure / Comply under the current rules.
