Question about pyromancers goggles

Asked by Fro780 8 years ago

Not sure if this is the right forum to post so admin please move it , if I'm wrong-

Anyway so if I have a Pyromancer's Goggles in play and use it 's ability to cast an Anger of the Gods does it essentially do 6 damage to all creatures on the board??

Kind of. You get a copy and the copy and the original each deal 3 damage. This is not the same as one source dealing 6 damage.

But all creatures will take 6 damage if both spell and copy resolves, correct?

Most of the time. Magic is a game of exceptions. Each of those (the spell, and the copy) will resolve separately. Damage does stay until end of turn. So barring other actions/factors, 6 damage will be dealt to each.

Edit, added factors.

As I said, each instance of the spell (the original and the copy) will deal 3 damage. Assuming both resolve successfully, that's 6 damage. But something could happen to one instance, or some action could be taken in between resolutions. Therefore, it is not the same as just dealing 6 damage all at once.

Long Version: Kind of. The first instance of the card (the one you're holding in your hand-)That version resolves and goes to your graveyard. It deals three damage to everything. Things that die are exiled. Then, the copy resolves, dealing three damage to everything. Since damage stays on creatures for each turn, something with 4/5/6 toughness will usually die to this sequence.

Short version: Yes.

To name an example where this would be very relevant, consider Boros Reckoner - the first 3 damage dealt to it will cause it's ability to trigger, and right after, it will die for having damage higher than or equal to it's toughness (the dieing event will be replaced by Anger of the Gods' exile effect). Either way, the player controlling the Reckoner chooses a target for 3 damage, and when that resolves, the second instance of Anger of the Gods resolves. Since the Reckoner is no longer on the battlefield, it's controller won't get to deal another 3 damage to target creature or player.

Another example would be Soulfire Grand Master that gives your instants and sorceries lifelink, and you cast the double Anger of the Gods with 10 Runeclaw Bears on the battlefield at the time. The first copy to resolve will deal 3 damage to each bear, gaining you 30 life and wiping the board clean. The second copy won't deal any damage, as there are no more creatures on the board, meaning you won't gain any life from it.
