Protection and fight effects

Asked by ChiefBell 9 years ago

Let's say you have a Wild Nacatl with pro black from Sword of Light and Shadow. If you use Domri Rade to make nacatl fight Tasigur, the Golden Fang, does nacatl take any damage? I assume the answer is no, but I'm unsure.

Yes, the Wild Nacatl will take zero damage from the fight since it has protection from Black that Sword of Light and Shadow provides.

You would be correct - protection prevents damage, enchanting, blocking and targetting (often shortened to DEBT), and fighting equals two creatures dealing damage to each other. Your Wild Nacatl won't get damaged from Tasigur.

Yeh, I knew the whole DEBT thing, I just thought that maybe fight effects were a bit different. I don't know why.

The weirdness in this situation is that Domri Rade can target the Wild Nacatl and the nacatl can deal damage to Tasigur, the Golden Fang, but Tasigur can't hit back b/c of the pro-black.

It's akin to casting Pit Fight between two creatures, then one controller casts an effect like Gods Willing. They can name Red/Green and fizzle the spell, or they can name the color of the creature that it is fighting so the spell resolves, but damage is only dealt one way.

@JWiley129: Actually, in case of Gods Willing, Pit Fight will resolve because some of it's targets are still legal. Because there's only one creature fighting, though, no fight will occur, and no creature will deal or receive damage.
