Progenitor Mimic Legends Question

Asked by MacAttack228 7 years ago

Hey everyone, just a simple question that I need cleared up:

Does Progenitor Mimic also copy the target card's name, then triggering the Legend's rule, or does Progenitor Mimic keep the name "Progenitor Mimic" and gain everything else from the target card it "Mimics"?

If it does trigger the Legends Rule, then at what point on my turn must I remove one of the legends? If it is removed at a later point in the turn, then wouldn't it be better to keep the Mimic around instead of the original since it will make a token copy that you can make use of before getting rid of the token?

The way I would be using this is the Progenitor Mimic in conjunction with either my commander Riku of Two Reflections so that I would be able to duplicate a spell/creature twice in one turn, or combo with Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind so that I can get double the card draw and double the damage until I have to get rid of one of the copies.

It becomes an exact copy and creates tokens that are exact copies, name and supertypes and all copiable values.

The "Legend Rule" does not trigger. It is a state based action that doesn't use the stack and cannot be responded to.

Whenever a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same English name, they must immediately choose one of them and put the rest into their owner's graveyard. This is not destroying nor sacrificing the permanents.

"Mimicking" Riku or Niv-Niv would be pointless because you would immediately lose all but one of them once Progenitor Mimic's upkeep ability has resolved. You'll never get the chance to use either Riku's or Niv-Niv's abilities.

A card copies all copyable values unless otherwise stated, such as Sakashima the Impostor does famously. Progenitor Mimic will copy the name, and therefore is a subject to the Legend rule.

The Legend rule itself is a state-based action. Those are checked every time a player would receive priority, so in your case right after the Mimic's ability resolves and the active player would gain priority in your upkeep, state-based actions would see two legendary permanents with the same name, causing you to put one of them into the graveyard. You won't be able to do anything before that happens (except concede the game), however triggered abilities still trigger and will be put on the stack.

Neither of the cards you linked interacts in any special way, as none of them as a trigger condition that's met before SBAs. You will technically get double the card draw and double the damage while both Niv-Mizzets are on the battlefield, though that is an incredibly short time - during which there's no way you'll be drawing cards.

A Legend that comes to mind that this could be useful on is Keiga, the Tide Star, as when putting the token into the graveyard, it's ability triggers and you gain control of any creature - for every upkeep, as long as you protect your non-token Mimic copy of it.
