Phyrexian Unlife - Lifeloss vs Damage

Asked by PennaMontana 8 years ago

Sup.

I played an Phyrexian Unlife, if I get damaged by creatures or spells now, I get poison counters.

But if I lose any life through effects of my own cards, like Spoils of the Vault, will this Lifeloss count as damage/poison counters? Or will I just get negative life?

Oh and sorry for my english :<

Damage causes loss of life, but loss of life is not damage. If you lose life while you control Phyrexian Unlife, your life total is simply reduced. You don't get poison counters because you aren't taking damage. You still won't lose the game for having 0 or less life.

Ok, so I actually only get damage when a card directly says it or my life points got attacked by a creature?

Thank you very much :3

Any damage will cause you to accumulate poison counters. This isn't necessarily combat damage. Some older spells like Ashes to Ashes will inflict it on yourself, direct damage like Lightning Bolt, Searing Spear, or Chandra's Ignition (which causes a creature to damage you) can all potentially kill you because they will deal damage as though they had infect.

Effects that just cause loss of life won't be able to kill you, like Spoils of the Vault, as you suggested.

If your life is too low, you won't be able to pay life either, for things like Necropotence.
