Phyrexian Ingester exling a */*

What happens when a Phyrexian Ingester exiles a card with a characteristic defining ability that sets it's power and/or toughness such as Consuming Aberration or Lord of Extinction?

There is a ruling regarding this on Phyrexian Ingester's gatherer page:

6/1/2011: If the exiled card has a characteristic-defining ability that defines its power and/or toughness (as Slag Fiend does), that ability will apply.

Gidgetimer Is correct. For further ellaboration: Phyrexian Ingester isn't copying the power and toughness of the creature card, which would give modifier (+X/+Y) of 0/0. For Phyrexian Ingester's ability, it checks the current power and toughness, which would be whatever your examples are at.

Example: Lord of Extinction with 13 total cards in graveyards has a P/T of 13/13. Phyrexian Ingester enters the battlefield and targets Lord of Extinction with the imprint trigger. The trigger checks the creatures power and toughness to be 13/13 and applies the effect for Phyrexian Ingester now to have P/T of 16/16.

If any effect reduces the power and toughness of the Imprint target before the imprint resolves, it will check whatever values are. Bile Blight on Lord of Extinction in response to imprint would results in a +X/+Y of (+10/+10). If the imprint target is not in play at the time of Imprint resolution, Phyrexian Ingester remains a simple 3/3.

Unfortunately Enyeto is almost exactly wrong except for the first and last sentences. That is how I thought the card worked too, until I did research to make sure my anticipated answer was going to be correct. According to another ruling on its gatherer page:

6/1/2011: Phyrexian Ingester will get bonuses based on the card's power and toughness in exile.

Phyrexian Ingester's second ability is a static one that gives a bonus based on the exiled card so the P/T is continuously tracked and the bonus changes accordingly. Characteristic-defining abilities function in all zones so for example, Lord of Extinction grows and shrinks in all zones, including the library, hand, and exile. This also means that P/T changes that only function on the battlefield won't affect the bonus. This includes but is not limited to temporary effects such as Bile Blight and Giant Growth; +1/+1 or -1/-1 counters; and Non-CDA abilities that change or set P/T such as Serra Ascendant's ability.
