interactions between Nissa, Who Shakes the World, Spark Double, and Forests

Asked by Kichirou 4 years ago

Nissa, Who Shakes the World has the ability "Whenever you tap a Forest for mana, add an additional (green)."

if you Copy Nissa with Spark Double then it also has that ability... so from then on all your forests would then generate 3 (green)

Correct?

also, second question... if i played Chromatic Lantern would they then generate (any color) + (green)?

Correct. Each instance of Nissa, Who Shakes the World (whether via Spark Double or some other effect) will add one additional to the total mana produced when you tap a Forest for mana.

Regarding your second question, it doesn't matter what color of mana that Forest is producing. The Nissa static ability will always add one to the total mana produced (for each instance of the ability).

So if, for example, you have a Breeding Pool in play as well as one Nissa and one Spark Double of Nissa, you can tap that Breeding Pool for , and the two copies of Nissa's ability will make your total mana from that one land (because Breeding Pool is a Forest). With Chromatic Lantern , your Forest could tap for one of any color, and then get as well from the two Nissa abilities.

right but what i was asking is, as a forest already generates a , would Chromatic Lantern then make it generate one of any color AND a or would that substitute it's innate with the ability to choose the color?

(this is separate from the Nissa combo... it should be a separate thread, but i decided to be lazy, sorry for any confusion)

Chromatic Lantern adds on an additional ability to your lands' existing abilities. So let's say you have a basic Forest in play. It has a (usually unwritten) ability:

: Add .

With Chromatic Lantern , your basic Forest now has:

: Add .

: Add one mana of any color.

So the lantern doesn't mean your Forest generates any extra mana, it just means it can choose between producing and producing one mana of any color. (The former ability, of course, now being a bit redundant in practice.)

ok thanks for the clarification, guess i just misunderstood Kogarashi, i'll mark his as the answer, but credit to you too xtechnetia i was thinking it would mean i could get the , then add one of any color, but that's fine too, that would give me the ability to have Spark Double in my deck and just have forests, and then use Chromatic Lantern to allow my forests to pay the cost of Spark Double

Sorry, I misunderstood your question about the Chromatic Lantern . I did sort of cover it in the last line of my answer, where I pointed out that a Forest plus two Nissa effects would total one of any color plus two green. It could be inferred that Chromatic Lantern adds a second tap-for-mana ability rather than increasing the mana already produced.

But thank you, xtechnetia, for covering that answer in detail.

In general, an ability only grants additional mana beyond whatever the land taps for if it says "additional" or otherwise has a triggered ability to add mana when you tap the land (see Fertile Ground , Trace of Abundance , etc.). Chromatic Lantern , as mentioned, adds a new tap-for-mana ability, rather than adding extra mana to what's already produced.
