Erdwal Ripper and double strike?

If I cast Assault Strobe on my Erdwal Ripper and deal damage, does the ripper now
deal 4 damage and get two +1/+1 counters,
deal 2 damage, get a +1/+1 counter, deal 3 damage, get another counter
or deal 4 damage and get one +1/+1 counter?

This question has already been answered appropriately, but I'd like to point out that Markov Blademaster is designed entirely around this ability interaction.

2 damage, get a counter, then 3 damage and get a second counter, so an end result of 5 damage and 2 counters.
