Do "at the beginning of your/ your opponent's upkeep effects occur at the same time?

Asked by Homura_Akemi 7 years ago

I have an 8-Rack deck with Necrogen Mists in it as a discard feature. My main win conditions are The Rack, Shrieking Affliction, and Quest for the Nihil Stone. All of them have "at the beginning of your upkeep" so I want to clarify that they all would occur at the same time, not Necrogen Mists first, which could result in more damage from The Rack, Shrieking Affliction, and Quest for the Nihil Stone.

They all occur at the same time, but you choose in which order.

When multiple objects controlled by a single player want to enter the stack simultaneously, the controller of said objects chooses in which way they will resolve.

So, for example, if you put the trigger from Necrogen Mists last, it will resolve first, and the triggers from The Rack, Shrieking Affliction, and Quest for the Nihil Stone will be next in line.

If an opponent controls an active Topplegeist for example, things change a bit: APNAP order (active player>non-active player). The player whose turn it is the active player. All of his/her triggers will go on the stack first, followed by those of the non-active player. That means that in this case, Topplegeist will resolve before any of 8rack triggers.

They all check trigger events at the beginning of the upkeep (this happens a single time per upkeep) and if they trigger go on the stack and resolve in FILO order.

The Rack and Necrogen Mists only have the condition "at the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep" and "at the beginning of each player's upkeep". They will therefore trigger on the appropriate upkeeps no matter what.

Shrieking Affliction and Quest for the Nihil Stone; however, have what is know as an "intervening 'if' clause". These two will only trigger if the intervening if clause is met at the beginning of the upkeep and will check it again when they resolve. So if the opponent does not have the one or fewer or no cards in hand respectively they will not trigger at the beginning of the upkeep. I would like to reiterate that this is at the beginning of the upkeep, before Necrogen Mists resolves.

So you can make them take extra damage from The Rack by stacking the triggers correctly but Shrieking Affliction and Quest for the Nihil Stone must have their conditions met before Necrogen Mists resolves to do anything.
