Countering the return from exile?

Asked by SithCommander 6 years ago

Can't seem to wrap my head around this one.

Mid-game, three player game.

Main cards involved:

Purphoros, God of the Forge (mine)

Vizier of Deferment (player 2)

Rewind or Cancel, can't remember. (player 3)

Purphoros attacks. That resolves. Player 2 casts Vizier of Deferment and exiles Purphoros. I end my turn, Player 2 does their turn and ends their turn. I should be getting Purphoros back to the battlefield now. Player 3 casts Rewind or Cancel or some other counterspell with the intent to counter Purphoros from returning to the battlefield. I'm not as familiar on the rules of this, so it resolved and Purphoros went to the graveyard.

Is this how it was supposed to play out, or how would it have played out otherwise?

Rewind and Cancel target a spell. However, Vizier of Deferment's ability is not a spell, it is an ability. Therefore it is not a valid target.

Note that Disallow and Voidslime can target abilities, and counter Vizier's return effect.

So it was resolved incorrectly and Purphoros should have returned to the battlefield. Thank you.

Just an added side note Purphoros, God of the Forge would come back at the beginning of your end step not player 2s. As the next end step is your.
