Noticed something on tapped out recently

TappedOut forum

Posted on July 25, 2015, 1:28 a.m. by trollslayer

The mood in tapped out has turned kindof sour or even depressed. Any ideas on what we can do to rectify that to make this a happy sight, or is it a, "he feels like that so just leave him be, because there is nothing we can do about it", way we are thinking? Ideas are welcome to be posted.

What do you mean in particular? I haven't been on the site very much lately, so I haven't really noticed this trend. Is it anything specific or just general vibes?

Why do you say the mood is depressed?

General vibes, also it's late and I'm tired so it might be my paranoia of the sort.

(Note to self, don't post forums while sleepy)

I'm not saying you're wrong at all, I just haven't been around enough lately to see. If this is the case, I don't know why really. Maybe it has to do with the userbase? I know myself and a lot of the last generation or so of TappedOut top-rankers have sort of fallen off a bit in activity, so this might be related. Maybe the nouveau-rank are all dicks or something haha.

I'm Happy!

I not know why you say everyones depressed! starts slitying wrists

no but really. I think that you're just encountering people with lifes. people have lifes. normally online you wont see them, but sometimes things go really badly, and thats the only time they talk about it.

I became an extremely active user when I first joined and would comment and participate in everything. Now that I have become less involved with the site and more IRL, I just lurk for the most part.

For me, it was the creative phase of my magic life that had me using the site a lot. However now that I pretty much netdeck (because I've not got enough time to come up with decks) I use the site a lot less.

I mean, this is exactly what some other users like Ohthenoises have been saying.

Moved.

This has been the subject of a discussion at the administrative level and amongst some of the top users. We're open to suggestions on how to improve the atmosphere.

In general, we've noticed that the "regulars" are fairly eager to shut down certain kinds of users, ideas, or threads, so what we end up with is dogpiling instead of discretion.

For example, a few months ago we had a user who would typically post random or incorrect assessments of the Standard or Modern meta. What ensued was almost always a group of established or knowledgeable users calling him or her out on being an idiot rather than demonstrating some tact and self restraint and ignoring the thread or offering neutral advice.

Yeah but right now, in this current moment, I haven't seen much that's awful in the modern forum.

It is something that were always working on though.

From what I've seen, the general vibe has improved from a couple months ago. This could be because I've not revisited the JC threads since I left, and that was mainly where I found negativity in the site.

I don't think that making TO into a 'happy' site is plausible, or productive, because if people just agreed to disagree, we wouldn't get anywhere. Some negativity is always good, because that's the way to best get your point across, but only in moderation.

I don't have any problems with the TO attitude at the moment, so I'm not worrying about this at all.

TBH toxicity is lower than it has been in some time. There are still occasional posts along the line of "That's bad and you should feel bad." But there have been a lot less then there were a while ago. It may be that one of the users that were bad about that blocked me and so I don't believe I see his posts any more, but my T/O experience has been better recently than it has been for a while.

I'm also not convinced that negativity is a good trait. You can disagree with someone and make your point well known without being negative. At that point they will either assess your point and either moderate or change their own opinion, or they will continue to disagree and negativity wouldn't have changed their mind either.

It actually appalls me to see the negativity. I despair for the state of education that people do not know how to express their ideas in a way that is respectful to their peers. Society is built upon the very precarious idea of mutual respect and when that fails people turn to savages. Both online and IRL.

The atmosphere seems relatively decent to me, but then again I wasn't involved in what now seems to be a legendary period in tappedout with that one person. What I have noticed is that there seems to just be simply less activity, which is a shame. I rarely see posts from all the users I remember when I started on this site.

My curiosity must be sated, can somebody direct me to these posts that caused such an uproar a few months ago? I can't help but want to read them.

July 25, 2015 6:37 p.m.

I have no real desire to look for them or to bring them to public attention again.

The point is that every so often, the community encounters someone they just can't ignore, and then I have to deal with bullshit from both sides.

Epoch can you close up this thread? I am int eh fault for posting this, and I wish there to be no more arguing over this. Good day everyone.

July 25, 2015 7:31 p.m.

There's no arguing going on here. Closing a discussion about how to address the community seems unproductive.

I have been trying to suggest methods about how to alleviate this problem numerous times, but everyone just goes, "No, don't put that it, it won't work." I'm kinda refusing to even put suggestions into the T/O forum because every idea just gets shut down.

A problem I see is that people want to be mods. They try to mod the general community, but they have no experience doing so, and end up saying something that comes off in the wrong mood or in the wrong manner. For example, someone may ask a question in a 2 week old thread that is related to the OP, but obviously different. People will immediately say that you should't post in an old thread and make a new one. Instead, a more proper way to say it is to answer their question first, and then politely mention that it is recommended to make a new thread. How you say things is key, and being very clear, open and polite is a big part of that key.

The moods and manners is another issue I see. Epoch is frequently misinterpreted as being condescending, and I see it as the manner of in which he writes his posts. Most people on this site are not university grade students or post-graduates. They will not be able to determine the difference between a debate and an argument, or a post that is meant to be analytical, straight to the point and sort of robotic. Mentioning "This is an automated message" or "mood of this post: (insert mood here)" are decent steps forward, though I hardly believe anyone's going to use the second idea. The only other alternative is to go through your post and edit it out to make it more approachable and more friendly. Sure I know that takes a long time and you just want to get it posted, but that's a short term benefit with a long term consequence. Let's try and aim at shooting for the long term benefits here.

I mean, the community isn't even that bad. At least I haven't been exposed to any of the things being described.

July 25, 2015 11:45 p.m.

On the whole, it's not. I find this an enjoyable place to manage, even if most of the management is endless tedium moving threads or deleting double posts.

As Femme said, it's largely a matter of getting people to respond more appropriately. I suppose we shouldn't realistically hope that the most, shall we say, colorful figures will never attract an audience because that's precisely their game plan. But we can improve on many things as a community. I don't think that becoming more helpful and more welcoming would hurt, even though our users are, on average, reasonably equipped in both capacities.

July 25, 2015 11:49 p.m.

Also, to Femme, I try not to shut down any ideas without suitable reason to believe they won't work. If you believe your ideas haven't been given appropriate consideration, I'm open for discussion.

I mean, compare Tappedout to most other online communities, or even online gaming communities. Tappedout is leaps and bounds better then most others I've been exposed too. There will always be the occasional troll or immature person, but that's just how life is. I think part of the problem (such as it is) is that people on here are SMART. And when people who are smart see a badly worded or unintelligent post, they feel it is their duty to correct that user. That is really the only thing that I have seen that is "wrong". Maybe just think a little before you post, and hey, if that particular person simply won't let it go, just remember what Mark Twain said: Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience. Just let it go, if that person wishes to be stupid, then let them. Again, that is really the only thing I have seen where people show bad manners to other people is when someone says something stupid, then people are all over them.
