What Shall WotC Do For MtG's 30th Anniversary?

WotC celebrated the 20th anniversary of Magic: the Gathering with From the Vault: 20, which was nice, but, in my mind, a rather underwhelming way to celebrate such a momentous anniversary. For the game’s 25th anniversary, WotC did a much better job with Masters 25, which was a very nice set, although I did find it to be interesting that the game’s 25th anniversary had a much better celebration than did its 20th, since 10-year anniversaries are usually much more significant than 5-year anniversaries.

The 30th anniversary of this game is still many years away, but I wonder what WotC shall do to commemorate it. The From the Vault series has been discontinued, so a From the Vault: 30 is not likely to happen, and the Masters series is currently on indefinite hiatus, so I highly doubt that there shall be a Masters 30, either, which leaves me wondering what they shall do, instead. It is easy to presume that there shall be a set with reprints from across the game’s history, but I also would like to see events celebrating that anniversary, as well, preferably events in eternal formats.

What does everyone else say about this issue? What might WotC do to celebrate the game’s 30th anniversary, or is it too early to speculate yet?

you want the events in legacy and vintage? what about modern?

for the 30th anniversary, i definitely want reprints of modern staples.

i also find your evaluation of the 20th vs 25th anniversaries confusing. 10 year anniversaries are more significant than 5 years, because 10 is bigger. therefore it shouldnt be surprising that the 25th had a better celebration than the 20th.

It's not that ten-year anniversaries are bigger than 5 years, its that 25 is a more significant number than 20. 25 feels more impactful and successful to humans, probably due to being a quarter of a hundred. We like patterns and nkce fractions, we're more celebratory with 1/4 anniversaries than 1/5. Taking it a step further, the 30th anniversary probably wont be very big, or at least not as big and exciting as the 25th was, by nature of 30 not feeling like an interesting anniversary.

Personally, I would love to see another set like Time Spiral that both looks to Magic's history and Magic's future. I think this would be a perfect way to celebrate a game that's been around as long as Magic.

smackjack - I am relatively sure Wizards will not be removing the reserve list. While I think implementation of the reserve list was a mistake, there are some potential legal complications if Wizards revoked the list.

That said, I think an anniversary product, be it a stand-alone set or a larger "block", would be a really fun way to introduce cards inspired by those on the reserve list. This could either be something like the Magus set of cards, which are clearly inspired by RL cards , or it could be a near-identical reprint, with subtype or mana cost adjusted some to bypass the RL policy.

smackjack: amen brother. there was no reason to have it in the first place, and theres no reason to keep it. literally nobody wants it, and wotc has so much to gain by getting rid of it.

smackjack, PlatinumOne, I, also, very much wish that WotC would abolish the Reserved List, but it is very unlikely that they shall, most unfortunately. However, they have been doing a great job in recent years of printing cards that do not technically violated the reserved list, but are sufficiently similar to satisfy the players.
