How Good is Death Cloud?

I have Death Cloud in several of my EDH decks, but I am reconsidering that decision, since that card hurts its caster, and I am not certain that those decks have sufficient resources to endure that card, so I may replace it with similar cards.

What does everyone else say about this? Is Death Cloud worth its high price, or is it simply too risky for its caster?

I think you need to ask yourself why you’re putting it in a deck. The card lends itself to a very specific strategy, and if your deck isn’t operating in that theme then this card has no reason to be there.

Fraying Omnipotence is better in my opinion. I run it in my Clavileno, First of the Blessed deck paired with Bloodletter of Aclazotz.

Aside from that I'm sure there are better options to choose from for you. :)

wallisface, at the time that I built those decks, I was nowhere near as experienced of a deckbuilder as I am, now, and I thought that that card was so awesome, but, now, I am seeing that that card is good only if a deck is specifically built to use it properly, so I definitely shall replace it with another card.

DarkKiridon, I completely forgot about that card, so I thank you, very much, and I most certainly shall put it into my decks in place of Death Cloud; thank you, very much.

It's a great fit for Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip, but most people would look the same at this as Armageddon. It resets the board for almost every resource available to play the game further, so if you have no creatures, no lands and no hand remaining and so does nobody else, the game is just slow to continue and even slower to end. If you aren't trying to break that symmetry, you're just wasting the time of all players involved, which most players will not thank you for.

plakjekaas, I do not have Tergrid in any of my decks, so I definitely should not keep Death Cloud in them, either.

It looks like a good card, but very mana intensive to make a big impact. Vona's Hunger is pretty great and instant speed, and you almost always get up to ascend in commander, especially if you are making treasures and things. Or Arterial Flow if you want to hit the discards specifically.

I'd think Death Cloud would either synergize with discard strategy or land destruction, or a very ramp heavy deck. Otherwise, I'd pick what part of it you want, creatures or lands or discard, and find a lower to the ground card to go for that.
