Momir Basic, the Format

MTGO

Never heard of "Momir Basic"? Read this.

How to play this deck:

Step 1: Play an Island if possible. You want to get an Island down as soon as you can because of creatures like Skeleton Ship . If not possible, skip this step and come back todo it when you get the chance. Don't play a creature turn 1 unless an opponent has a creature turn 1.

Step 2: Play as many Mountains as you can. There are lots of creatures with Firebreathing , which can easily close out games and there are very few creatures with mountainwalk. Try to avoid discarding mountains for this reason. Play a creature on turn 2-7, except on turn 5 if you're on the play and except on turn 2 if an opponent played a creature turn 1.

Step 3: Play as many Swamps as possible when you run out of Mountains, but be sure to not discard your last Plains or Forest to do so. You want to keep at least one of each basic in your hand unless it's already on your board.

Step 4: Play Plains before playing Forests.

Step 5: Only play Forests if you have a reason you need green mana. Very few creatures have activated abilities requiring green, but lots of creatures have forestwalk.

Step 6: You should aim to discard your last card to make an 8-drop on turn eight. If you get a creature that draws you more cards, 9-drops are better than 8-drops but not enough to warrant skipping another Momir Vig, Simic Visionary Avatar activation; 10-drops are better than 9-drops in the same way; 11-drops are better than 10-drops enough to make you skip one activation, as are 12-drops better than 11-drops; only 15-drops are better than 12-drops.

Exception: When you get a creature with a ability that requires a certain type of mana or a type of basic on your battlefield, evaluate if it's worth playing that basic out of order. These rules are guidelines to best anticipate the randomness.
