When is Power & Toughness checked?

Asked by vic 3 years ago

I have a Cenn's Tactician in play with a +1/+1 counter and equipped with a Veteran's Armaments .

My opponent attacks with 3 creatures. I declare that I will block 2 of them with my CT. I also want to cast a Unified Strike to exile the 3rd attacker (it's small enough), but I don't want to lower my CT's power & toughness for combat by making one less attacker.

Is there a way to pull this off? If so, what is the timing of events?

Veteran's Armaments is a triggered ability that happens when the equipped creature blocks (or attacks). Once the ability resolves, the number is locked in. Increasing or decreasing the number of attackers won't change the equipped creature's size.

Once the trigger has resolved, another round of priority will happen. You can use your Unified Strike then without losing the bonus.

Polaris So I'm a little bit confused on one point. You said when it blocks or attacks. I want to be clear on the distinction between blocking and declaring a block. I know that they are two different things. So if I declare a block, is that when it checks P/T, or it during the actual block? Hopefully that makes sense. I want to be clear on this point, because it will apply to other tricks. This is just one example I came up with. Thanks.

From the point that you declare your creature as a blocker, it is considered a blocking creature until the end of combat. This might be important for things like Sigrid, God-Favored .

But the wording "whenever equipped creature attacks or blocks" just means "whenever equipped creature is declared as an attacker or declared as a blocker".
