When a token creature is exiled, does it "die"?

Asked by vic 6 years ago

If I play an Oblivion Ring on a token creature, and there is a Quest for the Gravelord in play, can a counter get placed on the Quest? I seem to recall hearing that anytime a token leaves play, it goes to the graveyard (therefore counts as "dying"?) and then disappears.

No. Any time a token leveas the battlefield, it ceases to exist immediately after moving to the new zone. In the case of Oring, this is the exile, so it will not trigger the Quest. If it was a Fatal Push instead, it would trigger the quest.

From the Comprehensive Rules:

700.4. The term dies means "is put into a graveyard from the battlefield."

Exile effects do not put an object into the graveyard from the battlefield, and therefore don't trigger "whenever a creature dies" abilities.
