What is the purpose of Mirror Gallery?

Asked by Goja 10 years ago

Stumbled across a random booster pack in my closet, and seeing there wasn't much worth in the set it was from, I decided to open it just to try my luck. Inside, I found a card called, Mirror Gallery. It's ability is confusing and I don't even know if there's a use for this. Is there a use for this? Has someone broken it already?

You can control multiple of the same legendary permanent, it's not complicated.

It has the use of being able to control multiple legendary permanents with the same name.

I would use it with Isamaru, Hound of Konda because of the low mana cost. But I've never really seen it used that much.

2/1/2005 Mirror Gallery removes the "Legend rule" while it's on the battlefield. If all Mirror Galleries leave the battlefield, the "Legend rule" will apply the next time state-based actions are performed.

It's important to note that at the time Mirror Gallery was printed, the 'legend rule' was different from what it is now.

Back at that time, a individual legend could only be on ANY battlefield singularly. So if you had an Elder Dragon out, and your opponent Cloned him, you'd lose your Nicol Bolas.

The "Legend Rule" is the rule that restricts each player to having only one copy of any given Legendary permanent under their control. If a player somehow gets more than one of the same Legendary permanent, then they have to choose one to keep and put the rest in the graveyard. Mirror Gallery stops the Legend Rule from applying, meaning a player can control multiple copies of any Legendary permanent.

This card is a requirement for a shrine deck.

Mirror Gallery can also be used to counter Decks. I personally run a Sharuum the Hegemon deck. This deck wins by having something like Altar of the Brood on the board, then copying her, which creates a loop of sacrificing her and recurring her back. Thus milling every players deck. This can also be use to throw infinite damage or remove everyone's library's from the game with Bitter Ordeal. This interaction relies heavily on the Legend Rule and is much harder to pull off without it.
