Torpor Orb and Werewolves?

Asked by THeHan17 13 years ago

Hey guys. So I planned out a werewolf deck and I am having trouble. As I did my research on how to improve the deck, I took note of torpor orb, which states that creatures entering the battlefield do not trigger abilities. I am wondering what the ruling is with werewolves and their transform mechanic. With torpor orb, would casting a creature spell/putting an creature onto the battlefield trigger the transformation/stop the transformation of werewolves?

Well transforming of werewolves deals with casting spells and not creatures entering the battlefield. If no spells are cast during a turn then they transform into werewolves, if two or more are cast then they revert back. Creatures entering the battlefield have no effect. For instance- Say you have mayor of Avarbruck on the field with Viridian emissary and two birthing pods all on the field. You can then sac the emissary and then whatever you pull out of your library can be saced by the other pod, but since you didn't cast a spell then you're fine and the mayor will transform.

Let me make sure i understand what you are asking: Does having a Torpor Orb on the field then casting a creature spell still allow my human werewolves to transform?

Torpor Orb does not interact with the transform mechanic at all. Casting a spell (creature or noncreature) and a creature entering the battlefield are completely different.

The only thing Torpor Orb shuts down is triggered abilities that are keyed of creatures moving into the battlefield zone from any other zone. You can tell this because it specifically says the verb "trigger," and triggered abilities are the only thing that Magic rules will ever refer to as "triggering".

The Orb messes with abilities on creatures that trigger when they enter the battlefield, - "Whenever [this card] enters the battlefield...," such as Fiend Hunter 's - and abilities that trigger when another creature enters the battlefield - "Whenever [a creature] enters the battlefield...," such as Suture Priest 's or Champion of the Parish 's.

(Note that this means that yes, a Torpor Orb is absolute murder to an Ally deck...)

A werewolf's transform mechanic, while it is a triggered ability, has nothing to do with it or any other creature entering the battlefield, so the Orb doesn't interact with them at all. Casting a spell is not directly related to anything entering the battlefield.

I'd rather have Eater of Days and Phyrexian Dreadnought .
