Supreme Verdict, how you work?
Asked by Apex_Promethean 10 years ago
If I have a Stormbreath Dragon , and my opponent cast Supreme Verdict will my Stormbreath Dragon die since there is also blue mana in the cost of verdict? Or does the can't be countered plays a role in this?
Stormbreath Dragon will die even though it has protection from white becuase protection works like:
D - Can't be damaged
E - Can't be enchanted
B - Can't be blocked
T - Can't be targeted
Since Supreme Verdict does not do any of those, Stormbreath Dragon will die.

"Protection" and "countered" mean very specific things in the game.
"Protection from XX" defends against 4 things: D.E.B.T.
D - Damage from XX sources is prevented
E - XX Enchantments and Equipment can't be attached
B - XX creatures can't Block
T - XX spells and abilities from XX sources can't Target
Supreme Verdict is White, but it doesn't do any of the things that Protection from White can defend against, so Stormbreath Dragon will be destroyed
To "counter" a spell or ability is to stop it before it starts resolving and remove it from the stack with no effect (a spell is then put into the graveyard). The only things that can counter are effects that specifically say they "counter" something. This can either be from another spell or ability (Cancel , etc.), or from the game rules (a targeted spell with all-illegal targets gets countered).

Stormbreath Dragon dies. it doesn't even matter whether or not supreme verdict can be countered. protection doesn't stop death.
Remember the mnemonic device: DEBT
since Supreme Verdict neither damages, enchants, blocks, nor targets Stormbreath Dragon , protection doesn't apply at all.
note:
can't be countered only refers to being "countered" by cards like Counterspell and Counterbalance , if the effect doesn't say "countered", than "can't be countered" doesn't apply.
