Summoning your General in EDH and Commander
Asked by -Orvos- 11 years ago
First off what does EDH stand for? always wondered...
Secondly: Say i have Bosh, Iron Golem as my general and i happen to have Mycosynth Golem on the battlefeild. Does Mycosynth Golem 's ability reach into the command zone? Meaning that if I have enough artifacts in play I could basically always cast my general for free?
How much general damage does it take to kill an opponent?
How much life does everyone start with?
I know there are some ways to send a general back to places other than their command zones, how do you do that?

EDH is the old term for what is now known as Commander It stands for Elder Dragon Highlander. Back in the day, you could only use one of the Elder dragons as your general, and the highlander bit.... you know..... "There can be only one"
Your Mycosynth Golem would affect the casting cost of your general.
It takes 21 points ofgeneral damage tyo kill someone.
Everyone starts with 40 life.
You can send the commander to any zone, however, the opponent can then decide if they want to send the commander to the command zone. Of course, there is an exception to this: If you send it to a hidden zone, such as the hand or libnrary, they do not get the option to send it to the command zone.

First, you should read this stuff.
EDH stands for Elder Dragon Highlander, which is the original name of the Commander format.
Mycosynth Golem 's ability has no defines parameters that might limit what zones it affects. It affects artifact creature spells you cast, regardless of their original zones.
If you have an effect that specifies "hand" or "exile" (e.g. Wild Pair ), then that ability won't be relevant to spells cast from the command zone.
Remember, though, that each time you cast your general from the command zone, it costs 2 more to cast.
21 combat damage from a single general will kill a player as a state-based action. Control of the general doesn't matter. If you attack an opponent for 11 with, say, Uril, the Miststalker , then I gain control of Uril, the Miststalker and attack that same opponent, that player would lose the game (assuming the attack connected both times).
Players start with 40 life.
There is a replacement effect that allows you to put your commander card into the command zone instead of putting it into your graveyard or into exile. This effect does not apply to effects that would send your commander to other zones (e.g. library, hand).

So if i use Unsummon on someones commander, then they have to cast it from their hand but they dont have to spend the extra 2 for the Xth time they've summoned him right?

Correct. Tucking it into their library works that way too.

The "commander tax" only applies to casts from the command zone. It never applies to casts from other zones.

The commander damage rule only counts combat damage, not any other kinds of damage from a commander.

that is a very useful bit of information, seeing as i wanted Bosh, Iron Golem as my commander.

EDH = Elder Dragon Highlander.
21 Commander Damage to kill someone.
Everyone starts with 40.
Bosh, Iron Golem would be cheaper to cast so long as you have enough artifacts. Granted he costs an extra 2 colorless mana every time you summon him.
In your color deck, I would have to say Chaos Warp to tuck your opponents Commander back into their Library. Really mean trick ;)
Hope these answers work for you!
