Split second, and constant Enchantment/Artifact/Emblem effects

Asked by _Grintex 13 years ago

I play my friend playing a Zombie token deck and on the field i have an endless-ranks-of-the-undead, an Undead AlchemistMTG Card: Undead Alchemist, 2 Nightscape FamiliarMTG Card: Nightscape Familiars a coat of arms, and 40 2/2 Zombie tokens. I attack him with 20 tokens, he then cast Sudden SpoilingMTG Card: Sudden Spoiling. he then he uses PestilenceMTG Card: Pestilence to deal every thing 2.

Do all my creature die? or are they still getting buffed by coat of arms? Also if i had Eldrazi MonumentMTG Card: Eldrazi Monument out would they still be indestructible? Since that the creatures never had the ability, and it is an consent effect directed to me.

Coat of ArmsMTG Card: Coat of Arms and any continual buff, is not affected by Split Second which specifically references activated abilities and spells.

They are still getting buffed by Coat of ArmsMTG Card: Coat of Arms, as it does not use the stack. It is a state effect.

I should also reference layers for p/t modification as that applies:

Sudden SpoilingMTG Card: Sudden Spoiling applies at a lower layer than Coat of ArmsMTG Card: Coat of Arms, such that your zombies become 0/2s and then get the static buff from Coat of ArmsMTG Card: Coat of Arms making them 43/45 (assuming 43 zombies).

He couldn't use Pestilence because split second doesn't alow him to activate pestilence's ability.

@benzzer853 split second doesn't occupy the stack until end of turn. Once it resolves (and leaves the stack) then he activates PestilenceMTG Card: Pestilence. Perfectly legal.

Split second only prevents spells and abilities from being played until the spell with split second resolves.

Thanks, i thought so, but they kept debating it. So i would think this also applies to Eldrazi MonumentMTG Card: Eldrazi Monument or if i had an emblem that made all my creatures indestructible?

Yes the only way to remove those effects that effect all of your creatures, is to destroy the source, in this case Eldrazi MonumentMTG Card: Eldrazi Monument. And as far as I know, emblems cant ever be removed.
