Regarding persist and a new creature

Asked by wereotter 7 years ago

Her card isn't in here yet, so here's the portion of the text on the card, Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, I want to check the interactions of:

"Whenever you put one or more -1/-1 counters on a creature, create a 1/1 green snake creature token with deathtouch."

If I have a creature with persist that then dies, say Rendclaw Trow, will Hapatra see the -1/-1 counter being placed on the creature as it enters and give me a snake, or is that not considered being put onto the returning creature, and I get zero snakes out of it?

This will work. Entering the battlefield with counters does count as "placing/putting" them for the purposes of effects that care about those things.

Thanks! Guess that means I gotta be careful if I pair the two up and want to run Doubling Season Don't need it killing my creatures with a second -1/-1 counter as soon as they hit the field ;)

If you're mostly playing around with -1/-1 counters you might consider Parallel Lives instead, or even Primal Vigor, as your opponent is less likely to take advantage than you. If you're playing with Planeswalkers though, accept no substitute.

Yup! Though Doubling Season would mean two snakes when one of my critters could come back with a -1/-1 counter since it'd get two. Would just have to play around with it and see what's best.

If you have Parallel Lives or Primal Vigor when a persist creature comes back you get 2 snakes, because tokens are doubled. If you have Doubling Season when a persist creature comes back you get 2 snakes, because tokens are doubled. Doubling Season also doubles the number of -1/-1 counters the creature gets, because counters are doubled, but Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons only cares how many creatures get -1/-1 counters, not how many counters those creatures get.
