Red damage doublers/boosters with spells that hit everyone

Asked by CamraMaan 3 years ago

So I understand that if I attack with Torbran, Thane of Red Fell, with Gratuitous Violence on the battlefield, my opponent gets to choose the order in which the +2 and doubling occur. But what about when I have those two out and cast Sizzle with three opponents? Does each opponent choose the order, or do I pick one order for all? Obviously they should likely all choose the same order if up to them (double first), but since it's affecting multiple players, I don't know if the order of effects can be different for two players or not, as it would make sense that they all receive the same damage by default, not choice. Anyway, appreciate the help! :)

They each choose individually, though in the case you listed, there's no choice to be made. Sizzle deals 5 damage to each opponent, as Gratuitous Violence only effects damage dealt by creatures.

A good way to look at this is what the effects are doing. Let's say you have Torbran and Furnace of Rath out. They say that when damage would be dealt to an player you add two/double it. This is replacing damaging a single player (don't worry, it still applies to each of them), it's not replacing the whole "3 damage to each opponent." If Torbran said "If a red source you control would deal damage to one or more opponents and/or permanents they control..." it may work differently, but the rules would likely need to be updated to support such formatting.

Thanks, makes sense! And yeah, oops, Gratuitous Violence was not the doubler I was looking for! Ha!
