Prime Speaker Zegana ETB Timing
Asked by DaggerV 11 years ago
Assume an empty field.
Let's say I use Genesis Wave and I get Hydra Omnivore followed by Prime Speaker Zegana , will Zegana come into play with an additional 8 +1/+1 counters?
Also, let's say I use Tooth and Nail to put them into play, will she still get counters, or does she get denied since no other creatures are on the battlefield?
I guess what I'm saying is does it wait until she hits the battlefield to check, and does it matter if other creatures hit the field at the same time? Since I know if she hits the field and no other creatures are there she's zero, so I guess by that logic, if two creatures hit the field at the same time it'd still be zero but wanting to make sure.
Thanks, I really want to use her for my EDH, but in some games, there's no creature on the field so I had hoped a tooth and nail-like effect could still trigger it, but being replacement effect .. yeah. Cheers _

If you're playing EDH, Prime Speaker Zegana + Deadeye Navigator is all I need say.

I may use her anyways since I love her. I've been pouting for forever now that she doesn't have a home in any of my decks until I started to brew a green/blue draw-go deck that mirrors an old pet deck of mine.

Your later thoughts are the right ones. The ability that puts counters on Prime Speaker Zegana is a replacement effect that modifies how she enters the battlefield. It's applied as she enters the battlefield, meaning before she actually gets there. That means other creatures entering the battlefield at the same time as Zegana also won't yet be there when you're supposed to check for the highest-powered creature. Zegana's ability can't see them.
If there's an effect putting things onto the battlefield sequentially instead of simultaneously, like Primal Surge , then Zegana's ability will be able to see the creatures put onto the battlefield before her.
