Mutilate and Blink effects

Asked by sam154 12 years ago

Say I cast Mutilate and my opponent flashes in Restoration Angel to blink out another one of his creatures. What happens in this scenario? I know this sounds dumb but I ran into this with a friend of mine and we weren't sure how everything resolved. Thanks.

The reason blink prevent creatures from dying is that targeted effects no longer target the creature because it is now a new, but different, instance of the same creature. Attacking and blocking works the same way. Board wipes will resolve after the blink, and because they do not target the creature, it will die.

As an addition to Chibisukei's answer (which is correct), blink effects can only save a creature from a board wipe if they somehow return the creature after the board wipe resolves. Restoration Angel doesn't do that; it exiles the creature and immediately returns it, so that creature is still on the battlefield when Mutilate resolves. Since the creatures that Mutilate affects are determined when it resolves and not when it is cast, whatever your opponent blinked will still die.

First, you cast Mutilate . So that's on the stack. Then, they cast Restoration Angel , blinking (for arguments sake), Thragtusk . It gets exiled, then returned to the battlefield, they get their bonuses and whatnot. THEN is when Mutilate resolves. So everything is affected, even what they blink.

The only way that would work would be with Venser, the Sojourner s +2 or another similar card that returns the creature to the battlefield after an effect resolves.

I'm also having problems with Mutilate , i play soul sisters and i don't know how to work around it except with Immortal Servitude . Brave the Elements won't work, neither will Venser, the Sojourner because Mutilate 's effect lasts until end of turn. Is there really no other way to prevent creatures from actually dying?

Help.

You probably should have posted a new thread instead of reviving one that's been dead for 11 months. The only reason I know you posted here is my automatic subscription.
