MDFC card tries to flip
Asked by Delphen7 1 year ago
Say I cast Valki, God of Lies Flip. My opponent reveals their hand, and among other options, there is a Graveyard Trespasser Flip in their hand, which I take.
Now it gets weird. Say I make Valki a copy of Graveyard Trespasser:
- Does it become day if it wasn't already?
- If it becomes night while Valki is a copy of the day face, does he transform into Tibalt? Normally a card wouldn't, but Valki has a back side
- If it's night when I try to make Valki a copy, which Graveyard Trespasser face does he copy?

For #1: If nothing else has caused the day/night distinction to be brought to the game yet then yes, it will be day if Valki becomes a copy of something with Daybound. If the distinction has been brought to the game and it's currently night then it will stay night.
For #3: Valki will just copy the front face. Daybound/Nightbound only has an effect while the object is on the battlefield. In any other zone the characteristics default to the front face.

701.28c If a spell or ability instructs a player to transform a permanent that isn’t represented by a transforming double-faced card, nothing happens.
