Kaalia of the Vast and Desolation Angel

Can I pay Desolation AngelMTG Card: Desolation Angel's kicker cost if it's put into play with Kaalia of the VastMTG Card: Kaalia of the Vast or do I have to actually cast it?

Kicker is an additional cost that you choose to pay when you cast the spell (see the reminder text on a more recent card, like Gatekeeper of MalakirMTG Card: Gatekeeper of Malakir). Kaalia of the VastMTG Card: Kaalia of the Vast just dumps creatures onto the battlefield without casting them, so you don't get the option.

Yes, you have to scrutinize the text on the card. If a card pinpoints 'PUT' on the battlefield, then it is not cast, cannot be countered by cards like Mana LeakMTG Card: Mana Leak, and doesn't count as an actual spell.

Likewise, if something says 'when you CAST' or 'when you PLAY', those refer to when you are tapping mana for that card specifically - they count as a spell and can be countered by things like CancelMTG Card: Cancel.

Kickers specify their cost as being associated with actually casting the card to utilize that ability, so using a card like Kaalia of the VastMTG Card: Kaalia of the Vast or Quicksilver AmuletMTG Card: Quicksilver Amulet will not let you pay the cost.

Rhadamanthus is correct, effects that allow you to "put" a card from your hand or from anywhere onto the battlefield do not count as casting or playing the card.

Other effects like Djinn of WishesMTG Card: Djinn of Wishes or Cascade, for instance would allow you to cast Desolation AngelMTG Card: Desolation Angel for free and pay its kicker cost. Although Cascade would call for having at least 8 mana available or 9 in the case of Enigma SphinxMTG Card: Enigma Sphinx.
