Is Ulamog legal EDH general? Land types?

Asked by Ilovespiders 12 years ago

Can I use Ulamog, the Infinte Gyre as an EDH general? and if so, could you use any kind of basic lands in the deck? Or would you be restricted to lands that add colorless mana only?

Yes, its a legal general (you can use http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php to find out what cards are legal). If the land has a color symbol on it its illegal, (so no basics), however things like Command Tower are.

Yes, no, and yes, respectively.

Here are the commander rues, where you can check card-legality for yourself, and where they explain that color identity dictates that land's color identity have to match the commander's.

In short, color identity is determined by all instances of mana symbols appearing on a card, rules text, and by color-indicator (if applicable). And since all basic lands have "T: add [RELEVANT COLOR] to you mana pool," they all have colored identity.

A colorless commander needs all colorless lands.

Good luck.

Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is illegal, but Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth are both legal. Yes you will have to use all nonbasic colorless lands, as basic lands are colorless but have a "color identity" of whatever color they tap for.

The mana base of colorless generals is EXPENSIVE if you want it to be any good. All of the good artifact mana and generators of colorless mana are not cheap.

Quick question: Since Command Tower says to add a mana of any color that is in your commander's color identity, doesn't it produce nothing since Kozilek is colorless and the rules clearly state that colorless is not a color? Doesn't this make Command Tower a dead card in colorless EDH?

Command Tower is indeed useless in colorless EDH, although it's legal to have in your deck.

I guess Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth would work in combination with it. I think that's legal in colorless.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth would indeed work. Your lands would become Swamps in addition to their other colors, which would allow cards like Command Tower and Meteor Crater to tap for black mana, which would then become colorless due to Commander rules.

Played with a guy who had an Ulamog deck. One player played collective voyage.
