Is this a viable infinite mana combo? Argothian Elder + Maze of Ith

Asked by tempest 12 years ago

Can I attack with Argothian Elder , untap it with Maze of Ith , tap the elder to untap maze and another land, tap the other land for mana, and keep repeating this process? In other words, once a creature is declared an attacker, how long does it stay attacking?

Trying to use this combo for my deck: Mana, Mana, Mana Everywhere!

Maze of ith removes it from combat, so no.

@NoSkillManiac: That is incorrect. Maze of Ith does not say the attacking creature is removed from combat; it only says that it becomes untapped and damage that would be dealt to and by that creature is prevented. Therefore, this combo works.

10/4/2004: The creature is still part of the combat. It just has its damage prevented. Don't infer something from the fact that it becomes untapped.

Unfortunately you can only declare him as an attacker once per turn. You declare attackers, then you would get a chance to tap Maze of Ith to untap him but that would be the only time you could do this since the declare attackers step is now over.

It doesn't say that it's removed from combat, it just says to prevent all damage that would be dealt to and dealt by the creature.

Ok. Thanks Epochalyptik. That's what I thought. Just wanted some confirmation.

Im sorry, I misread Maze of Ith , so this combo does work. As long as you planned on making the mana and using it before the combat damage step (during either declare attackers or declare blockers step)

It works, but only gives you infinite mana during the combat step. Not a problem since most inf win cons are instant speed.

Also HOLY COW this is a brilliant combo why have I never seen this before.

Not if you have Upwelling . :)

Well then, Time to make an infinite combo. :P

That in an Omnath, Locus of Mana edh deck.

Maze of Ith reads untap target attacking creature. the only time you'd be able to untap the creature is if he attacks, so yes the combo works, but not inifinite since you only have 1 attacking phase.

@wannaplaymagic: I'm not sure what you mean. It's certainly an infinite combo. Attack with Argothian Elder , then untap it with Maze of Ith . Then, use Argothian Elder 's ability to untap Maze of Ith and another land. Tap Maze of Ith to untap Argothian Elder and tap the other land for mana, then tap Argothian Elder to untap the two lands. Repeat for infinite mana.

A creature is attacking from the time it is declared an attacker to the time combat damage is dealt. So it's in infinite combo as long as I use the ability during the time in between

Once your attack phase is over Argothian Elder is no longer attacking... how is that so hard to understand..

For someone so quick to point out the obvious, you're pretty slow to notice that we're talking about making infinite mana during the combat step.

That's the reason for Upwelling or Omnath, Locus of Mana to keep the mana in my mana pool or cast something like Comet Storm during the attack phase to win

Maze of Ith may not work, but I am 99.99% sure that Freed from the Real will (and it's a lot cheaper)

Halphinian: I thought that it didn't work, but then I looked at it, and as it turns out, I am wrong about Maze of Ith not working. But if you want infinite mana in your main phases, Freed from the Real works nicely.

Sorry for the spam :)
