Is Doubling +1/+1 Counters Considered Placing them on a Creature?

Asked by derposaurus 11 years ago

This deals with Kalonian Hydra and a Fathom Mage in particular.

Lets say I have a Fathom Mage on the field with one +1/+1 counter, and the Kalonian Hydra went on the field last turn. If I swing this turn with the hydra, doubling the number of +1/+1 counters on the mage, will I draw a card from Fathom Mage ? Also, if yes, will I draw two cards the next time i swing with Kalonian Hydra ?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, any counters added to Fathom Mage via either Kalonian Hydra , Vorel of the Hull Clade , Master Biomancer etc., cause her to gain counters and you to draw equivalent cards.

It is a bit more complex than that though.

Fathom Mage first into a Kalonian Hydra Fathom Mage becomes a 2/2 - This gives it 1 +1/+1 Counter. Draw 1 card.Kalonian Hydra swings, Fathom Mage becomes a +2/+2 (Effective 3/3 before damage is dealt.) Draw 1 card.Kalonian Hydra swings (Second Time), Fathom Mage becomes a +4/+4 (Effective 5/5 before damage is dealt.) Draw 2 cards.

Since you are doubling the amount of +1/+1 counters on Fathom Mage you are effectively using its ability twice.

Try throwing Illusionist's Bracers on Kalonian Hydra . This would effectively double it's effect. Slap a Ranger's Guile onto it for hexproof as a response for those "Oh SH*T" situations, and you've got something mean. And it's standard.

Ranger's Guile is a temporary +1/+1. Check out Vorel of the Hull Clade , tap him to double counters.

*Kalonian Hydra enters with four counters. Pay 3, tap Vorel, make it 8 counters. Next turn, pay 3, tap Vorel again, make it 16 counters, he swings as a 32/32 trampler the turn after he enters. GG if he's not removed.

splash in black, toss in a couple Corpsejack Menace and you might need a calculator and some breathing techniques.
