infinite angel generation

Asked by 9-lives 2 years ago

When you use Angelic Accord, then trigger it with Chaplain's Blessing, if I'm not mistaken, you can trigger Angelic Accord infinitely, because Bishop of Wings gives 4 life for each angel, and then you gain an angel, then trigger Bishop of Wings again, ad infinitum. Is this true?

I don't think so. The "beginning of your end step" only happens once. Here's the order of operations:

  1. You announce the beginning of your end step.

  2. Angelic Accord triggers. In reaction, you cast Chaplain's Blessing.

  3. Chaplain's Blessing resolves, and you gain 5 life. Angelic Accord's life gain clause checks, sees 4 or more life gained, and puts an Angel token creation on the stack.

  4. Angel token creation resolves, state-based actions are checked (this is the point where Bishop of Wings triggers), and "the beginning of [this] end step" is now over. Angelic Accord can't trigger again, even though Bishop gains you additional life.

(Somebody please correct me if I'm misinterpreting something.)

Ahh thanks legendofa. I overlooked Angelic Accord's 'at the beginning of each end step'.

Not quite. A triggered ability with an intervening "if" clause won't trigger at all if the condition isn't satisfied. If you go into your end step without having gained life, Angelic Accord won't trigger at all. Also Chaplain's Blessing isn't an instant so you can't cast it during the end step, but that's beside the point. Other than that, you're mostly right.

  1. Go to end step
  2. Angelic Accord checks if you've gained 4+ life, and triggers if you have
  3. Accord resolves and creates an Angel, triggering Bishop of Wings
  4. Bishop of Wings resolves and you gain 4 life.

To work the way OP was hoping, Angelic Accord would have to be worded "Whenever you gain 4 or more life, create an Angel token." As you very correctly pointed out, Angelic Accord only triggers once, at the beginning of the end step.
