Illusionary Mask!

Asked by LiquidKid 11 years ago

Okay I have an Illusionary Mask out on the battlefield. There is a Chalice of the Void also on the field with one counter. I pay 1 to summon Phyrexian Dreadnought , is the Dreadnought countered? What about if I paid 2 for the Dreadnought? Same question with Hunted Horror being summoned face down and countered with a Spell Snare . This is one of those wacky rulings that I have a hard time understanding. Thanks for looking, LK

From the Gatherer page:

While the creature card is face down, it's a 2/2 creature with no name, mana cost, color, creature type, abilities, or expansion symbol. Since it has no mana cost, its converted mana cost is 0.

Since they enter as facedown creatures, they have a CMC of 0, and a Chalice of the Void with 1 counter or a Spell Snare won't do the trick. When you flip them up, they don't go on the stack or re-enter the battlefield, so they can't be countered then either. If Chalice of the Void had 0 counters, it'd work then, but what you listed above wouldn't work.

I don't think that is correct. they are put into play and flipped off of an ability neither spell is cast so they are not countered by the chalice or by Spell Snare. the ruling quoted is about morph cards not the mask. Stifle could counter the ability but the card simply wouldn't be put into play it wouldn't go to the graveyard.

Yeah, the card isn't cast erabel; it's simply put onto the battlefield.

Actually Gidgetimer and PotatoPi, erabel is right. According to the gatherer page, Illusionary Mask works exactly like Morph.

Well that will teach me not to use the wording on the Tappedout page for a card. Apparently they don't keep it updated with the current Oracle text.
