Gain control of end of turn that has a lot of equipment
Asked by Ecmdrw5 7 years ago
My opponent has a Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith with Loxodon Warhammer, Sword of the Animist, Argentum Armor, and Hammer of Nazahn. I play a Malevolent Whispers. Do I gain control of the creature with all the equipment attached so I get all the buffs? That would make him a 19/11 with trample and lifelink and all the good stuff. If so, can he equip them to a different creature in response?
Equipment attaches to the creature, and will remain on the creature even if ownership changes. See Rule 301.5. However, you do not control the equipment--you only control the creature itself. Rule 301.5d.
What does this mean?
You will control Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith.
Your opponent will control all the attached equipment.
Loxodon Warhammer gives the equipped creature +3/+0, lifelink, and trample. You will benefit from the lifelink, since the creature (which you control) was given lifelink.
Sword of the Animist will give the creature +1/+1. However, because your opponent still controls Sword of the Animist, they will be the one to benefit from the second ability--thus your opponent will be able to search his or her library for a basic land and put it onto the battlefield.
Hammer of Nazahn will give the creature +2/+0. However, your opponent will still be the one to benefit from the first ability, as they still control the equipment.
Argentum Armor will still give the creature +6/+6. Your opponent will control its destruction ability.
Rule 301.5:
Some artifacts have the subtype Equipment. An Equipment can be attached to a creature. It cant legally be attached to an object that isnt a creature.
Rule 301.5d
An Equipments controller is separate from the equipped creatures controller; the two need not be the same. Changing control of the creature doesnt change control of the Equipment, and vice versa. Only the Equipments controller can activate its abilities. However, if the Equipment grants an ability to the equipped creature (with gains or has), the equipped creatures controller is the only one who can activate that ability

Taking control of Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith with any effect will let you attack or defend with it (or activate any of its activated abilities, if it has any) and your stolen nazahn will have all the benefits bestowed upon it by all of the equipment attached to it,
But
ONLY the effects bestowed to the creature as your opponent is still in control of those artifacts and all of the triggered abilities on those specific artifacts will be under your opponents control.
As an example you cast Malevolent Whispers talking Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith from your oppponents control.
All of your opponents equipment listed is still attached to Nazahn
Nazahn is now a 19/11 with Haste, Trample, Lifelink, and Indestructible
You attack your opponent with Nazahn and the triggers from Sword of the Animist and Argentum Armor go onto the stack, those triggers are controlled by your opponent and would resolve accordingly.
Lastly, assuming you cast Malevolent Whispers on your turn your opponent cannot move equipment off of Nazahn in response to anything without having something like Leonin Shikari in play and the required resources to pay the equip costs.
