fetchlands
Asked by mrh357 10 years ago
I am building a Surrak Dragonclaw deck and am wanting to include fetchlands. i am wondering if i can include all of them or just the one(s) that search lands in my color identity. For example: just Wooded Foothills and not Bloodstained Mirebecause of the swamp search potential.thanks for the help

Well, you can run Marsh Flats, but it would be even worse than a basic land.

The reason they are usable in any deck regardless of the deck's colour identity isn't that they "don't directly add mana to your mana pool" (Since things like Spectral Searchlight add mana directly to your mana pool and are colourless) It is because they lack any mana symbols in their casting cost and rules text to assign them a colour identity. Similar but notable distinction.
And depending on the deck, even Marsh Flats isn't necessarily worse than a basic land. Maybe he has a line of play in his deck that wants him to be able to shuffle his library on demand. I have an Ambassador Laquatus Tiny Leaders deck (which is thus, mono-blue) which runs the U/X fetchlands (which are strictly worse than an island by this logic, since they are an island plus paying one life) but they're there because of Hedron Crab

All the fetchlands are colorless for both gameplay purposes and color identity. This is because they don't directly add mana to your mana pool. So in a Surrak Dragonclaw deck you can run all the fetches minus Marsh Flats because you can't put a swamp or plains in your Temur deck.
