Does Ethereal Haze Prevent Triggered Abilities from Creatures?

Asked by GoldenAgeBatman 6 years ago

Hello! I have a question regarding the interaction of cards like Wayward Servant or Sanctum Seeker against an opponent.

Can the damage from either of their triggered abilities (e.g.

"Whenever another Zombie enters the battlefield under your control, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life."

or

"Whenever a Vampire you control attacks, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.")

be prevented by a card like Ethereal Haze which reads "Prevent all damage that would be dealt by creatures this turn."?

Thank you!

Please, for clarity, link all the cards in your question

Wayward Servant, Sanctum Seeker, Ethereal Haze

No, the abilities on the zombie or the vampire will not be affected by Haze. These creature's abilities make their opponent lose life, which is not the same as deal damage. Compare their text with say, Guttersnipe for comparison, whose ability will be prevented by Ethereal Haze.

It's important to understand that while damage causes life loss, life loss is not itself necessarily damage. So as Boza said, cards that say "(player) loses X life" don't count as damage for damage prevention.

You can link cards with double brackets, like so:

[[Wayward Servant]]

Wayward Servant
