Does blinking Meddling Mage or Nevermore allow me to block two spells at the same time, or just one?

Asked by the5ervant 11 years ago

Let's say I used Meddling Mage or Nevermore 's ETB effect to keep someone from ever casting Overrun . Then, I use Venser, the Sojourner 's +1 on Meddling Mage or Nevermore and name Rancor .

Once everything resolves, will they be able to cast Overrun again? In other words, once Meddling Mage or Nevermore leaves the battlefield, do their effects stop?

The abilities of cards only apply on the battlefield, with the exception of a few circumstances. Therefore, when Meddling Mage or Nevermore leaves the battlefield, its ability ceases to apply. When it re-enters the battlefield, you may choose a new card, but the card you chose before can be played again.

Once either of those cards leave play the previously named card can be played again and only the card you name when it re -enters the battlefield can no longer be cast. So if you play it naming Overrun , and then blink it, Overrun can be played again unless you just name Overrun again when it re-enters.

According to their Gatherer pages, once either leaves play their affect stops working.

You could, however, use Declaration of Naught , naming Overrun , and then if they tried to cast overrun, you could pay U to counter it, and say they respond with something like Stifle, you could blink Declaration, bring it back naming Stifle and then counter Stifle

in Devonin scenario though you would need something else to blink the Declaration of Naught because you can't use planeswalker abilities in response to something. They can only be played during a main phase when the stack is empty
