Do I keep Opponents Olivia if I steal her using Mirage Mirror?

Asked by Seiva 2 years ago

If I use Mirage Mirror ability (Mirage Mirror becomes a copy of target artifact, creature, enchantment, or land until end of turn.)

to copy Olivia Voldaren and then use Olivia's second ability (Gain control of target Vampire for as long as you control Olivia Voldaren)

To take the opponents original Olivia do I get to keep the original once MirageĀ  mirror turns back to normal?

Yes you do.

When an ability of a card references the card by name it is shorthand for "the card that this ability is on". It doesn't matter if the name used in the ability is different than the name of the card or if the name of the card later changes. You will be able to keep their Olivia for as long as you control the Mirage Mirror.

This works, but there is a slight wrinkle. Olivia Voldaren is legendary, so if you steal her with the copy's ability, you'll now control two legendary creatures named Olivia Voldaren. Because of the legend rule, you'll have to immediately sacrifice one of them, which will either leave the original in the graveyard or your Mirage Mirror (which would then return their Olivia because you no longer control the Olivia that stole her).

The easiest way to get around this is to find a way around the legend rule, like Mirror Gallery or by using a different clone card like Spark Double.

The hard way to get around this involves a lot of mana and stack abuse, plus something like Lithoform Engine.

  1. Activate Mirage Mirror, targeting some random not-Olivia permanent (in a pinch, itself).

  2. Hold priority and activate Mirage Mirror targeting Olivia.

  3. Resolve the top ability. Mirage Mirror is now an Olivia.

  4. Hold priority and activate Mirage Olivia's ability, targeting original Olivia.

  5. Hold priority (again) and activate Lithoform Engine's first ability, targeting the Mirage Mirror ability still on the stack.

  6. Resolve Lithoform Engine's ability, selecting a non-Olivia permanent as the target for the copied Mirage Mirror ability.

  7. Resolve the ability copy, turning Mirage Olivia into Mirage Not-Olivia.

  8. Resolve the Olivia-stealing ability to steal Olivia. You only have one Olivia in play, so the legend rule does nothing.

  9. Resolve the first Mirage Mirror activation. It doesn't matter now, but you needed it on the stack for Lithoform Engine to target.

  10. ???

  11. Profit!

This move costs and requires the stars to be perfectly aligned, but the look on your opponent's face will be a memory you can treasure forever. If you have some extra mana and want to assert total dominance over both the stack and your opponent, add the following steps:

6u. (update) Target Lithoform Engine with the copied Mirage Mirror ability.

7b. Sacrifice your Lithoform Engine to the legend rule, leaving the Mirage Engine in play.

7c. Hold priority again and activate Mirage Engine's first ability, targeting the Olivia steal ability on the stack.

7d. Resolve Mirage Engine's ability, copying the steal ability to target another of their Vampires.

7e. Resolve the copied steal ability, stealing a Vampire.
