Do cost increasments stack on top of trinisphere?

Asked by nickiru 9 years ago

Does the cost to cast stack on top of Trinisphere ? from cards like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Thorn of Amethyst and Grand Arbiter Augustin IV ?

Please give rules and such to back it up. I have searched around and no one argues with any of the game laws.

Thanks.

When figureing out the final cost of a spell, you apply modifiers in this order: Add, Subtract, Set.

So if Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Trinisphere were out at the same time and you wanted to cast Lightning Bolt , Thalia would add (1) to the bolt's cost, then we'd apply Trinisphere to it. The bolt's final cost would be R2.

I think the first gatherer ruling seen here answers your question:

12/1/2004 - Trinisphere ability affects the total cost of the spell. It is applied after any other cost increasers or cost reducers are applied: First apply any cost increases. Next apply any cost reducers. Finally look at the amount of mana you have to pay. If it's less than three mana, you'll pay three mana.

Ok. Can you show me in the rules where it would state this rule?

Sure.

  • 601.2e The player determines the total cost of the spell. Usually this is just the mana cost. Some spells have additional or alternative costs. Some effects may increase or reduce the cost to pay, or may provide other alternative costs. Costs may include paying mana, tapping permanents, sacrificing permanents, discarding cards, and so on. The total cost is the mana cost or alternative cost (as determined in rule 601.2b), plus all additional costs and cost increases, and minus all cost reductions. If the mana component of the total cost is reduced to nothing by cost reduction effects, it is considered to be 0. It cant be reduced to less than 0. Once the total cost is determined, any effects that directly affect the total cost are applied. Then the resulting total cost becomes locked in. If effects would change the total cost after this time, they have no effect.

By the way, if you scroll down on the link WomboCombo provided, you'll see "rulings" at the bottom. Gatherer often has frequently-asked rulings posted there, including the answer to this one.
