Do cards that state "Damage can't be prevented" go through Protection?

Asked by Xodiax 12 years ago

I'm referring to cards like Leyline of Punishment, Banefire, Skullcrack etc.

For example:

If Leyline of Punishment is on the field, can I damage/block Kor Firewalker with a red spell or red creature?

and

Let's say I don't have Leyline on the field.

Would I be able to Combust anything with protection from red?

No, because the official ruling on "Protection from " " is this:

702.15b :A permanent or player with protection cant be targeted by spells with the stated quality and cant be targeted by abilities from a source with the stated quality.

So you still would not be able to target them with a red spell or ability. They can however be damaged by red sources because the ruling on protection from damage is:

702.15e Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.

But again, this just goes back to the whole issue of not being able to target it. Try a global burn or something.

You shouldn't be able to, cause you can't target a creature who have protection from red with a red spell in first place, same goes with blocking, you can't block it either with a red creature.

But if you cast Volcanic Fallout with Leyline of Punishment out, Kor Firewalker would die.

Or if you cast Blasphemous Act or Chain Reaction or Slagstorm or...

Protection does a few things, including damage prevention. If damage can't be prevented, then that part of protection won't be applicable, whilst the others will be unaffected (can't be targeted, can't be blocked, can't be equipped/enchanted). So anything that deals mass damage, for example, will be able to damage the creature with protection in a regular fashion.

So you can damage Kor Firewalker with a red spell, but you can't target it with a red spell/ability or block it with a red creature.

Protection from XX does 4 things: D.E.B.T.

D - Prevents all Damage from XX sources

E - Disallows Enchantments/Equipment from being attached

B - Disallows Blocking by XX creatures

T - Disallows Targeting by XX spells or abilities from XX sources

Having something like Leyline of Punishment only stops that first one, not any of the others.
