clarify hexproof for global board whipes
Asked by olowleye 13 years ago
my buddy says my Lumberknot will not die from day-of-judgement. is this true? why or why not.
Thank you all!
He is wrong. Hexproof means that the permanent can't be targeted, i. e. if the spell or ability says "target" it won't work. For instance, Lumberknot can't be targeted and shot down by Cunning Sparkmage .
Day of Judgment does not have the word "target", so hexproof does nothing.
Incidentally, hexproof also does not protect the creature from being chosen by a card. Just because Lumberknot has hexproof doesn't mean it avoids Scrambleverse - notice how Scrambleverse doesn't target the permanents, just the players. It also means that players can still sacrifice hexproof creatures to effects such as Geth's Verdict .

114.9a Just because an object or player is being affected by a spell or ability doesn't make that object or player a target of that spell or ability. Unless that object or player is identified by the word "target" in the text of that spell or ability, or the rule for that keyword ability, it's not a target.
Since Day of Judgment doesn't say "target," it doesn't actually target. It's just a global effect.

this is how Day of Judgment , Wrath of God , Damnation , etc can kill a Progenitus (although, he would then be shuffled due to the replacement effect, but he still is no longer on the field).

Hexproof and shroud prevent things from being targeted. Since Day of Judgment
doesn't target anything, hexproof won't protect Lumberknot
.
